'62 gas tank relocation...

The dreaded question...does anyone sell a underbed/drop in tank kit for these trucks?
I found one on eb*y, they're for 63' & up, but for an extra 50 bucks they'll make it fit my 62' at a cost of $549. plus shipping/tax...ouch!
I did PM one vendor on board here months back, but never heard anything.

Forgot to mention, the truck will have a fleetside bed & bumper on it also...(couldn't edit 1st post).

The 60-62 frames are wider... that means the 63-66 tank should physically fit, just need to modify the mounting arrangement.

And since you have the bed off the truck those modifications should be much easier. Remove the rear crossmember, locate the tank, and then relocate the crossmember or make new ones.

The ID rail to rail is about 36" & the pocket between rear crossmembers is 36" L by 11" W before moving either crossmember.

Honestly I was hoping someone was making a bolt in unit that didn't cost 600. before I have to start fabbing stuff up. In my previous life I worked in a truck spring/driveline shop so that isn't a problem, just amazing how these 3 years 60-62 fall by the wayside in the aftermarket.
It's starting to look like the 63+ tank is where i'm headed...

The good news is your frame is considerably wider, which opens the door to more donor tanks.

The tank I used was a a '49-'52 Chevy passenger car gas tank. I had to trim the frame rails to get it to fit, and for the filler neck. On your truck you shouldn't have to do any trimming.

Here is a drawing I did of the tank / frame modifications that you can use for reference dimensions:


And this drawing shows the same tank set-up but mounted flush with the top frame rail. (I used the arrangement shown above so the tank wouldn't show from the rear or side of the truck)"

Here are some pics of the early mustang tank I'm using in my 66 lwb fleetside. I had to a little frame trimming but there's very little hanging below the rails. I don't know the width of the 62 frame rails so I don't know if you'd have to trim the rails or not.

For my swb truck, there's a space conservatively measuring 36" x 12" between the two rear crossmembers,that is where I want to put the tank as i'm using a fleetside bumper & brackets & would like to keep as much or that as stock as I can.I really want to fab as little as possible.
I'm now starting to look at custom steel tank companies,I need a sender that runs 0-30 OHMS (0-empty & 30 full/) correct?

Thanks. You can find them several places such as Summit, Tanks to Pans, and others. Most are made by the same company in Canada and have a 3yr. warranty. I got mine through e-bay. $100 and free shipping. Most sites are charging about $125 plus shipping. The only thing is you'll have to modify the sender if you are going to use the stock gas gauge. The mustang is separate. I found a site that will build and modify senders for just about anything. I haven't looked into prices, yet, as I'm not ready to wire things up. If you want one and want to get fancy. I saw a stainless steel one offered on one site for about $250, if my memory serves me correctly.

So here's what i'm looking at...I can cut the rivets out & slide the last crossmember back about 5.5 inches & that'll give me a rough ID of 36" x 18", the factory crossmember has an existing relief on the ends (you can't see it from the angle I took these shots from) so I think i'll be able to fit the fleetside bumper brackets in there...
I'm hoping to buy a 63' up reloc. tank kit & fit it in...if I liked aluminum/fuel cells this would be a no brainer..but I like cast aluminum & stamped steel on my vehicles/bike...Anyone who can suggest a tank(maybe a part #!!) & sending unit that would work definitely chime in.
Yes i'm also cleaning/wire brushing/ painting the suspension & rails!

I looked there myself,I think the universal p/u tank looks good for me.
I have to give them a ring & see about the sending unit & making it work on my factory gauge.
