Even "good" tires fail

My neighbor bought on old 96 RAM V10 for parts for his older crew cab RAM rebuild but took it out for a short drive today. The RAM has 3 fairly good tires and one bald one. The best tire of the lot blew out today. I had them all aired up to 60#. Took out the inner fender liner also. So, you can't predict tire failure by looking at the condition of the tread. Guess what brand this was?

Common misconception alot of people have, me included.

I got a full set of 31 inch tires last summer some guy stored in a storage locker because his wife did not like the noise on the highway. They still had blue over the letters and looked brand new.

That summer while Moving the back left came apart and later that day the right rear came apart.

Now I wont mount up anything that is not off the rack brand new rubber.

No and no. Tires are 3 years old, sidewalls are good - no cracks or bulges or dry rot, tread is good -especially this one, except for one bald one which did not blow out. Air was at proper pressure.
Think the other end of the spectrum - which brand would you expect to blow out when still in this "good" condition?
I think I will send this in to Click and Clack for a puzzler question.

Thats what it looks like to me also. My dad has a set on his Z71 and they have been great tires . I put a different brand set on my crewcab at the same time he had the Kumho's intalled and I have already replaced mine. His still look great.

It's possible those "New" tires for sale on the rack are already 3 or more years old. Add 3 more years to that and they are past their expiration date.

BINGO on that TireRack link; there's PLENTY of unscrupulous dealers out there who will sell you old stock that LOOKS newish. ALWAYS ask to check those dates--- Buyer beware!

DOT 0607 - so about 4 years old. Should still be a good tire, in my experience.

Exactly. Was that air pressure always @ spec?

It's the equivalent of saying all sbc's are junk because some were prone to over-heating when the one's over-heating had sub-standard cooling systems.

I'm no tire expert, but I would say that tire was bruised. At some time in it's life, it hit something in the road and bruised the liner. The liner leaked into the belt plies, until it separated.

A few years ago, California was doing alot of highway work at the AZ border. We made many trips to the dunes that year. They were milling the highway down, and left the bridges alone. when you hit the bridges, it was like hitting a short curb. My dually was loaded heavy, and so was the trailer. Over the period of six months, I replaced all 6 Michelins on the truck, and all 4 BFG's on the trailer. Every tire looked just like the picture, or had a large bubble in them when removed. All of the tires were less than 2 years old.

Points well taken, although Kumho did have a recall on Road Venture tires made from 2005-2006 - reason: sidewall failure and blowout.

My neighbor took that blown out tire back to Discount Tire yesterday and they gave him the full purchase price of the original tire, since the original purchaser bought the replacement warranty and I found the original invoice in the glovebox. He purchased BFG ATs as new replacement tires - I have found those to be good tires. I was not sure that the warranty would be "transferable" to the next owner.

those tires also look like there dry rotted on the side wall check this out, If tires are over 6 years old from build date there not safe even if they have zero miles on them, in the video theres 12 year old tires being sold as brand new

i changed tires on a customers volvo C70 it was ½ year old not even 2000 miles on the tires they where from may 2009 they where dry rotted

The tire was not dry rotted, but its seems many here are convinced that it was. What you see in the picture is a sidewall that was rolled over on itself after blowout. Each to his or her own.

i own a 34ft fifth wheel camper trailer.and,read alot on rv forums.chinese tires get a very bad rap over there.they have such a blow out reputation they started calling them "chinabombs"...google it if you get bored.
