Help! torque converter - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I have read and studied everything in this forum and elsewhere on how to properly install a torque converter. I just had my TH350-c (Lockup) trans rebuilt. I ordered a new conv. and went to install the trans. and there is no gap between the Flex plate and the conv. I literally spent 30 minutes taking the converter on and off, spinning it back and forth and every thing else and I am as positive as I can be that the Conv. is seated properly. I replaced the rear engine seal while I had the trans dropped and the flex plate is on correctly. I even put the old torque converter back on to check the gap and it also has no gap. I understand that there is supposed to be 1/16 to 1/8 gap and the converter should turn freely. The man that rebuilt my trans. is supposed to be very experienced but I am wondering If the correct pump was used in the rebuild? Any suggestions or ideas? Does the lock up trans also have to have the same 1/16 to 1/8 gap? Thanks much for any help

anytime ive done a trans replacement theres been a gap..

Sometimes it's tough to get the converter to seat right. That's sure what it sounds like.

I'm not sure hot
w to explain fitting a Torque Converter , I was taught in the dealer , to invert the tranny and place it in place then rapidly rotate it forwards & back , as the slines line it , it'll drop a bit with a " clunk " .

There are three steps of splines but careful attention to where you place it to begin with , reduces this to two .

If no gap , DO NOT button it up ! .

We used an old 35 gallon grease drm , it fits the bell housing *perfectly* .

Jackie, sorry to tell you this, but you don't have the convertor properly seated. When a straight edge is placed across the transmission's bellhousing mounting face, the torque convertor mounting lugs (the 3 pads that mate to the flexplate) will be approximately 1" toward the rear of the vehicle.

The two teeth on the converter engage the pump in the trans. The new converter and pump are not worn on those lugs and are prob keeping themselfs from seating all the way. Turn the th converter real fast like your palm driving while pushing just a bit.
