Air horns? Where did you mount them?

So im thinking about hooking up a nice set of air horns on my truck. MY biggest concern is where to mount them where they will be out of the way and still perform well. Anyone using air horns?

Re: Air horns? Where did you mount them?

How about the outside of the core support and pointing down? Those things are loud anyway, wouldn't think pointing down would matter that much.

Re: Air horns? Where did you mount them?

I would think you could see them through the grille (71-72) but I could be wrong.

Paint them satin black. Or put a black cover in front of them.

Re: Air horns? Where did you mount them?

You may want to try the Inner Fender as well. On my 1-Ton, I'll be putting a set on the Roof in the original position of where they are located on a large truck. But on a Pick-up, I would try the Inner Fender having them facing forward.

Re: Air horns? Where did you mount them?

On my '67, there's 2 holes in the forward crossmember, directly below the fan. I made a wood mounting bracket (well, that sounds fancy. really, I just hacked on a 2x6. lol) and put them there, pointing horizontally.

Re: Air horns? Where did you mount them?

The 65 Buick Riviera had an optional 4 note trumpet horn, and they were mounted to the underside of the hood on one of the supports.
Painted black and mounted on the core support would be my favorite.

Get out and drive the truck this summer and have some fun!
It sucks not being able to hear!

LWB trucks rule, if you don't think so measure your SWB!
After talking to tech support at Air Lift I have found out that the kit I need is 60811. Per the measurements I gave them. Ride height of truck inside spring and inside diameter of springs.

Re: Air horns? Where did you mount them?

Now you see them, now you don't.

I spent literally hours on my creeper under the truck trying to figure out where to put them. When I do my tear down rebuild I will move the horns to where the now Aux gas tanks are, for now this is the best I could do and keep that "no officer there are no train horns under my hood" straight face.

and if anyone is curious the kit I run is a modified version of this.

I upgraded from this starting point.

Re: Air horns? Where did you mount them?

well it might be cool for you to have them on your truck o0r car and it might be fun to see some guy get spooked so bad he veers over into another lane and hits another car or having a semi run over him.they call that assault with a deadly weapon and if you cause a accident and he dies its man Slater 10-15 to life

should read the DMV hand Book on loud horns semis has to have them 80,000 pounds of weight

i like to know if i'm in his way

Here in calif the brothers like using them on people and man i been hit 3 times in one month and it sends me all over the road it scares me so bad you do it to a 80 year old women and they get a witness all i can tell you if you get away

BURN your ride

Just another idea ...

This type horn takes a very small space. 70cstjr has one and it is loud.

I've had discussions with several CHP officers about them and local L.e.o.'s and what they tell me is if your using your horn to avoid an accident your within the law and there is no California statue regarding train horns (or that style) on vehicles. And I have a commercial driver’s license and have not seen anything in the DMV hand book that says they are illegal on a passenger vehicle. The only thing it says is “do not honk your horn unless it is a safety warning to avoid a collision”. That’s the rules I follow while driving. I don't use them to drive through malls and scare people outside of the movies and etc...

I have blown them at friends’ houses, at the beach and in the desert because everyone wants to hear them.

I installed them for the main reason as I am sure you are aware of is, people in CA suck at driving. Since I have had them on the truck I have avoided at least 3 accidents I can recall.

1. An escalade in the rain that tried to merge into my lane on the freeway and was kind enough to return to their lane and an undercover cop was in the opposite lane and when I looked at him he just laughed.
2. Exiting the freeway a minivan coming off a side street tried to merge between me and the vehicle half car length ahead of me. They were nice enough to pull over and park after I emptied the air tank on them.
3. On the way to work one morning while traveling 70mph on the freeway a Bmw decided it needed to get over 3 lanes and stop in mine and then slam on the brakes while on their phone. They too were also kind enough to move out of my way while their phone ended up in the back seat somewhere.

And I know there have been a few more I can't think of at this moment.
Two of those near misses my now 4 year old son has been with me in the truck. The cost of keeping him safe is priceless.

I learned a long time ago you can't fix stupid on the road. But, at least I learned how to tell it to get out of the way.

I take your point st and it's a valid one, but I'm not going to be roaming the streets scaring Granny's outta their support stockings...I can assure you.
So.Cal has pretty much made my point for wanting them, a bit of fun in a safe environment, and getting some dufus's attention before they cause an accident.

Here is a interesting rig I saw at the last Brothers show.
He and I talked a bit, and he said that he got a ticket once for a horn blow.
The ticket was "blowing horns in a non emergency"...

Cheers!

Re: Air horns? Where did you mount them?

Well I like to think I'm above the hijinks of my youth....but when I watch these train horn videos they crack me up (so much for growing up ). I would totally roll with those things.

On my way to work I pass several large groups of school kids in their morning stupors waiting for the bus. HONK! cracks me up just thinking about it.

Never would blow it in traffic, or at another vehicle though (I have grown up a tad lol). Heck I dont remember the last time I blew my regular car horn at anyone.
