Re: weight of a bed?

This is purly an educated guess. I would say that a complete short bed [with metal floor] is 750-825 LBS. The long bed will run about 200LBS more. These beds seem to be real similar to the late model beds in that catagory. Jim

Re: weight of a bed?

Jim, I'm guessing too but I'd say your high. I lifted a 99 silverado 6.5 box with a friend and I'd say we had about 200 lbs each with tailgate on. These older ones have a little thicker steel so I'd guess I would say it would be around 450.

Re: weight of a bed?

Two guys can very easily lift off a short bed. No idea if the guesses so far are even close.

My son and I went to lift one off once and it was incredibly heavy. Turns out the thin piece of metal someone stuck in there for a bed floor wasn't thin after all.

Re: weight of a bed?

A buddy of mine and I lifted a long bed off of my truck and put it in my back yard, but, no tail gate and no floor (it was wood)...we're both kinda old so it wasn't all that heavy, 350 - 375lbs.

I know *I* am a candy a$$. But I didn't know my 3 friends were, too. One on each corner of the short-bed,
steel-floor and we each had only 112.5 lbs?

I was the only one panting...we only moved it about ten feet on two separate occasions.
I would have guessed I had at least 120 lbs on my corner

Clearly a guess on my part.

Thanks for the guesses guys, 4 sawhorses sould be enough. My plan is to stand the bed up on end{cab end}with some support and flip it over on the horses.

I took the short bed stepside with wood floor off my truck two weeks ago, me and one other guy, both of us are average joes, had no problem.

Re: weight of a bed?

I roll long wheel base beds off all the time by myself, they are heavy thats probably why I have a bad back

Re: weight of a bed?

I've removed it by myself before -with some help from wife.

Remove the bolts and disconnect all electrical wiring. Get two boards either 2X4 or 2X6's that are longer than the bed. I think I used 10' ones for my short bed. Lift one side and have the wife or a buddy) slide it under the bed and do the same for the other side. Place the back end of the boards on two saw horses and slide it backwards.

My guess is the bed weighs around 350 pounds or so.

If you have a cherry picker or tractor, here's what I did recently.
Attached chains under the 2X4's where they intersect with each other and gently lifted while buddy guided it onto two saw horses.

(2X4s fit under the top rail. Boards are not bowed. they just look that way)

Re: weight of a bed?

Well bed is off and on sawhorses,9 of us did it.The weight was not an issue but we inverted the bed w/o putting any weight on the quarter panels while flipping.Very happy with the condition of frame and bed underside. Thanks for the help.

Re: weight of a bed?

How'd 9 guys move a bed lol I just can't imagine that many fitting around a short bed. 2 guys can flip one all day long. 2 can do a long bed but 4 make it easier. 2 saw horses are enough to hold the weight as well.

Re: weight of a bed?

Guess I shoulda called you but the Florida Keys is a long way from BC.{just kidding}

We had 4 guys on each side and rotated it without putting any weight on the ground.I was spotting for the sawhorses, that makes 9.Not sure we could have done it with less{safely}w/o it resting on the ground. Not heavy just awkward.

Re: weight of a bed?

Lol I need the vacation but we are just finally getting our summer now, so have to wait till Dec to leave now.

I actually just took off my Grande Sierre bed last month by myself haha. I stripped all the wood out though so it was lighter, but still the 8.5foot bed is huge. Was akwards but I did it without damaging everything. Just have to think carefully about how to do it. Lots of times it's just me working on my trucks so it's always up to me to do it alone.
