Found this in the weeds, what year is it?
Hey guys,
I ususaly hang out on the 60-66 side of the board. I recently ran across this 69-70 truck and was wondering if anyone could tell me what year it is, or any other things you might notice. Also, were there different trim levels avalible? It looked like it has rust in the rocker channels, and then some rust in the cab below the roof on the passenger side (maybe a mouse got in there and rusted it out). How difficult would it be to replace that part of the roof? I was checking out "project No-life" on the project board and this blue truck doesnt look to have as much trim as the No-Life project. Does that mean it is a different year, or just a different trim package? I only snapped one picture because I didn't want to get shot. And here is where I played around with MS PAINT: |

That is a great looking truck as long as the area above the windshield is not all rotted out.

It did look like there was a little rust above the windsheild. This doesnt look easy to repair. I was thinking about finding the owner and making an offer on it, but I don't want to bite off more than I can chew as far as a project goes. I would just fix it mechaniclly and drive it.

That's a 70 grill, no doubt.

Re: Found this in the weeds, what year is it?
Looks like the rocker panels are gone below the door, If I were you check out the floorboards real good like from underneath and also the cab corners. You might also want to open the hood and look back at the firewall on each upper side (if your looking at the firewall look at it all the way across the firewall at the top look for RUST) and see if you can see any rust. Check out the passenger side inner fender at the front under the battery tray to see if there is rust down there as well. I would say look down inside the Cowl Pannel as well to see if there are any holes in duct plenum (Cowl Panel is the panel right behind the hood with the slits in it). I hope you dont find much rust and also look at the bottom of the doors as well for rust. Take a flashlight and some clothes that you dont mind getting dirty. Its best to know what your getting yourself into before you start a project. Good Luck,
JRBECK64 P.S. Check out the cab supports as well, they basically hold the floorboards up from underneath. |

Re: Found this in the weeds, what year is it?
Not sure about all that - but too bad it's a short bed because it looks like it has original bed rails on it!
Which aren't easy to find (for lwb anyway). You took them off in your editing! No way - those are too original to be removed~!

Re: Found this in the weeds, what year is it?
Not like that. I meant all as in all posts preceding mine, because I don't know either way other than the look of those rails.

Re: Found this in the weeds, what year is it?
It looks like the attention was being directed at that little spot below the drip rail. The surface rust on the top of the roof is no big deal, but that little bubble right at the window seal looks scary.

Re: Found this in the weeds, what year is it?
Thanks for the replies, I agree, the rust below the drip rail does look a little scary. I may ride back out tomorrow morning to take a look (1.5 hour drive). Before making an offer, it would be important to look it over really good as it is located in north eastern OH.
The bed rail on the other side was busted off about half way down. I am not a big fan of bed rails, but I really like how skinny these look! The reality is that I don't have a place to put it. I am moving in a couple weeks from western, PA to Raleigh, NC. I was trying to convence myself that I could bring it with me, but the legistics of the situation are going to be tough to work out. Thanks again for all the replies, I have learned a lot as far as what to check when looking at a project (big thanks to JRBECK). James |

Look through 72SWBChevy's build thread. He repaired his roof - which may be similar to what you might need to do.
