Remote brake fluid res?

So this weekend I had the pleasure of dealing with the under the frame master cylinder. Even though there is a access hole in the cab it is a royal PITA to remove trim to get the floor mat up blah blah blah..
What are you guys using as a remote resivour? I've searched but can not find one available after market. Did any of you fab your own, repurpose something?
PICS please if you have them.

Re: Remote brake fluid res?

The thing with a remote res is, you have to have the right master brake cylinder.

Flaming river makes sweet looking units. You can buy them at Summit also.

Wilwwod makes the units for remotes as do others. This top unit is a stock unit of some m ake with a res. The bottom unit uses a remote res.

Re: Remote brake fluid res?

You can get replacement caps for newer MC units that accept a remote line.

With a little creative brazing you could make your own.

Thanks guys;

That's where my thinking was heading. I hope to be able replace the stock cap with a metal one and plumb in a remote res. I cant think of a reason why it would not work..

Re: Remote brake fluid res?

FFredo,if cost is an issue , VW bugs(the old ones,not the Golf in the prom dress) used a remote reservoir that you could use,it would fit well on the firewall,plumb in some lines to your adapted cap and you're good to go!

You could get one cheap from a pick a part or junkyard,just make sure you get the one suitable for dual circuit.

Re: Remote brake fluid res?

Fredo,
You're talking about adding a remote reservoir to the factory single master cylinder? Or you have/will upgrade to a modern dual master cylinder and then put in a remote res?

I can see you could drill/tap the original lid and use one of Scott's, but frankly the single master cylinders are dangerous to keep using.

Re: Remote brake fluid res?

The original cap has a vent hole in it. It is made of cast iron. You can drill it and tap it for 1/8" pipe, install an elbow that will accept 1/4" hose, use VW but blue master cyl. hose, and and use a C5 corvette hydraulic clutch reservoir. If you use a 1/8" thick piece of aluminum about 2"6", you can countersink the back side of the aluminum plate with the bolt pattern for the C5 reservoir, and drill the plate mounting holes to mimick the bottom of the factory voltage regulator holes, and without adding any holes to the cab, mount it below the voltage regulator.

Re: Remote brake fluid res?

Thanks agaim everyone;
Coupeguy, my MC has a plastic cap. I am looking for a steel cap to use. That is basicly my plan, use the cap and drill/tap to receive the new plumbing. Thank you for the great detailed help.
