Seatbelts

Did all of the 1967 c10's come with seatbelts, I know federal legislation passed in 1966 but I absolutely despise the darn things (long story of why) and would love to take them out, but want to make sure that I am not going to get nailed.

Re: Seatbelts

I dont like seat belts either but I wear mine religiously .About 15 years a go I was on my way to work and I usually did not wear my seat belts at all but for some reason I used them that morning .I was going along pretty good (60-65mph) in a Mazda SE5 pickup driving in the rain when I lost control went thru a pasture fence and hit a very large pine tree dead center ,totaled my truck ,not a straight place left on it anywhere .All windows shattered during impact and I was just stunned and in shock but alive due to wearing those seat belts for whatever reason. That was the one and only time I had ever used my seat belts while I owened that truck and I use them EVERY TIME now.

Re: Seatbelts

I have often wondered this same thing for my 64 Impala, I'm not a fan of them but I wear them as it is law... except in my Impala, it didn't come with them so I bought a set but I can't bring myself to put them in... does anyone have a definite cut off of when they are required?

Re: Seatbelts

if it bugs you that much, go see a shrink, tell him you are having nightmares every night for 10 years that you are trapped in a car that is either sinking in water or burning up, and you can't get out due to a stuck seat belt. Tell him that you are getting more and more scared to drive and that the thought of putting on your belt makes you hyperventilate (or however it's spelled).
Then ask if there is a legal way out of it in your state.
I know here you can have a Dr note that excuses it.

Or just put it on and deal with it.

I remember a state trooper came in to talk to my driver's ed class in high school (over 25 yrs ago), and the only thing i remember him saying was that he had been at the scene of hundreds of fatal crashes but never unbuckled a dead body from a car accident.

Whatever reason a person thinks is good for not wearing it is not good enough.

Re: Seatbelts

The reason why I dont like them is because I would have been killed in a rollover accident had I been wearing one. The cab top was squished flat to the level of the box and the truck had a 5 point system, had I been wearing it I would not have been able to go to the side and my head would have been in my chest cavity. Agreed 99.9% of the rest of the time they are a great system.

Re: Seatbelts

I won't wear them on principal, although most cops here just gesture to me to put them on, which I do, and when they're outta sight I take em off.

It's just another part of my freedom to make a choice of my own that's been taken away, another example of the nanny state, if my ass follows my head through the windshield then so be it...it was my choice and ultimately my mistake to make.

BUT!! if I'm carrying passengers, then I want them to belt-up for the simple reason that I'm now responsible for their safety while in my vehicle....and so as not to look like a hypocrite I put mine on too....so for 99.9% of the time they just sit there making the bench seat look untidy.

WI state patrol has never had any issues with my vehicles that have had 5 point setups and I have never heard of that being an issue... Is that something that is unique to OH?

I believe that it is illegal to modify any safety equipment in a car, seat belts included. While it seems that a four or five point is better, federal law says you can't mess with the factory seat belts on street legal cars.

Re: Seatbelts

I wear seat belts religiously in vehicles with shoulder belts. I seldom wear the lap belt since they were deemed inadequate and are not up to standards. They are 1/2 safe,at best. It has been proven that separation of the lower spinal chord is a common injury "caused" by lap belts. Also, your upper body still moves and, although your head won't hit the windshield, you can injure your chest or head on the steering wheel or other parts of the truck.

Re: Seatbelts

5 point systems are supposed to be used only with aroll bar, for the exact reason you listed. Had you been wearing a 3 point system, it would allowed your upper body to lean in to the center of the vehicle, preventing your head from being pushed into your chest cavity.

Amen-There is a myth that people often repeat that "if they weren't wearing a belt they might have been thrown clear of the crash". People that have been ejected from the vehicle don't do very well either especially if projected through the windshield first. A law of physics states "A body in motion tends to stay in motion unless acted upon by an external force". At 60 MPH, your body is going 60 MPH. In a collision, you're truck is going from 60-0 in a few seconds but your body doesn't know that until it hits something (seat belt, steering wheel, dash, windshield etc).

I always wear seat belts. Walked away from two collisions myself with nothing more serious than a bloody nose. The cars looked a lot worse!

Having said that I believe it should be up to the driver whether he wears a belt or not. For kids-no question-it has to be mandatory.

My question to you is, do you have health insurance? If you do more power to you, although they probably wont pay up when they find out you weren't wearing a seat belt, which means taxpayers (IE the rest of us) will have to pay your ER bills.

9 times out of 10 i agree with your nanny-state freedom speech, but in the case of no helmets on motorcycles, and people not wearing seat belts, i wholeheartedly disagree cause that money is gonna come out my pocket to fix you after you crash.

Re: Seatbelts

I work in the medical field and whether you were wearing your seatbelt or not has no effect on coverage... either way I did not start this thread for a bunch of nit picking I started it to find out the law of when it took effect and the details of all of it. I found this out thank you for all who helped. and to each their own on whether they wear one or not it is not your decision to judge anyone on their decision.

That would depend on your insurer, and what state you live in..There are policy's, at least in the state of Florida (and let it be known the only state i am familiar with) insurance CAN deny your claim for medical benefits if you committed an offense that caused your injury, IE drunk driving, no seat belt etc.

Nice story to tell the kids, but dead people are pulled out crashes all the time with seatbelts still on.

Don't get me wrong, I wear mine all the time, but if you get hit in the driver's door by a semi doing 60, the seatbelt isn't going to save you.
