1988 14 bolt options
I have a Factory 4.10 gear in my 88 R20 Suburban. Im gonna be driving it alot this winter and would like to try and get some better mileage out of it. Ive never messed with rear ends much. Other then swapping in a mini spool, and a power tracs. Ive seen some 14 bolt rears cheap on craigslist. What years swap with this truck? Also how can you tell if its the 9.5 or 10.5 ring gear without taking the cover off?

Re: 1988 14 bolt options
a gm 14bolt 10.50 is a full float axle , you can pull the axle shafts out with no dissasembly of the dif 8bolts on the hub . This is a heavy duty axle that is easy to work on. get a locker or limited slip , you wont enjoy a spool on a street vehicle espically a hevy one!
A 9.5 is a semi float like older gm rwd cars and is not heavy duty. |

Re: 1988 14 bolt options
F-85 not sure if you remember me but i bought that axle set from you and you sold me a full floater 10.5 which i won't be using but here's a picture of a semi floater in the first pic and the second one is a full floater and then the lmc pics as well, they changed the full floater in 88 i think with a more ribbed housing pretty noticeable difference and slide off brake drums
