Is a 60 c10 shortbed a good buy?
Hello forum, its been a while since I posted but here I am and it feels good. Lol.
So I found a 60 apache sb with a sbc 350 and a 700r4 which are not installed for 850 with the drive train and 700 without the motor and tranny combo. I think its a good buy. What do you guys think? The only thing holding me back is that the cab has lots of rust on the drip rails and window pillar posts..Also its a 60 and I cant just bolt on a 350 because of the torsion bars right? I need a whole new crossmember etc ...Please let me know what you guys would do....I wish I had pics... |

You can install a 350 in a 60 without changing the cross member. You just have to get new mounts. If you want to bag it you will kneed a new cross member. As for the rust I agree with Clyde65.

Thanks for the responses..The pillars have cancer holes... and the upper front dripp rails have cancer holes.. Cancer is also apperant on the inside of the cab...rear view mirror mounting holes are totally gone. Sounds like a pass

I agree. Unless you're a sheet metal wizard with a lot of enthusiasm, that much rust damage usually means looking for a replacement cab. There are a lot of nice 60-62's, but it's easier and cheaper to start with a 63-66 everything else being equal. Especially if you want to drop the suspension. The aftermarket offers a great deal more bolt in support for the later chassis.

Did the 60 have the side trim?

1960-66 Chevy / GMC Truck Buyer's Guide
http://www.stovebolt.com/techtips/bu...uide_60_66.htm Known Rust Issues •The mounting points of the radiator core support •The cab support mounts •Check along the bottom lip of the hood and around the turn signal lenses. Just above the windshield on the inside and outside. Once the roof leaks, the roof pillars are subject to failure - if this happens then the rear of the front fenders are being hit by water from the road as well as raining down from above. •Look in cab corners and check for dirt or old rags as this area may be rusted out so badly that there is a hole. Inner kick panels (the vertical side area next to your feet if sitting in the seat) and floor boards (also climb under the truck and look). Pull back the rubber floor board mats if you have to. •Inner and outer rocker panels •Bottoms of the doors, inside and outside •The bottom of the front fenders, next to where they line up to the doors •Check the vent windows in the doors to make sure they still swing back and forth. Sometimes the "'pivot" point at the bottom of the frame of the vent window has rusted out. •Give the metal a good "poke" with some kind of object, especially if the truck has been sitting for awhile. If it has a shiny paint job, this might not be a bad idea either but be careful what you try to poke it with so as not to irritate the current owner. •Check catalogs or online sites of parts vendors to see what patch repair panels are commonly sold to see what areas are more prone to rusting. This will give you a well-rounded idea of rust issues to check out. Magnet test to check for bondo and heavy filler putty.
