Questions on th400/205 vs th350/205

I bought a used th400/np205 setup here a few weeks ago. It is the fixed output version, the seller said he pulled it from a 80's SWR K30.

I am wanting to put this in my 71 K10. It currently has the original th350/205 combo.

I have a community college that I attended about 5 years ago that is willing to rebuild the trans, and install it. I want to make sure this will pretty much be a bolt in deal. I'd hate to throw a confusing project at these kids trying to learn how to rebuild tranny's for the first time. I'm mostly concerned with the drive shaft length, and overall length of the whole setup being the same. I plan to wire the truck for the kick-down solenoid, and get that setup on the carb before I take it into them. I don't want to let them find out the hard way, and them potentially run out of time to get it done.

Anyone know off the top of their head if this is a bolt on type project?

Re: Questions on th400/205 vs th350/205

either the engine will have to come forward some, or the xfercase crossmember will have to go back... or both. im doing the very same swap this weekend, im going to try to slide the engine forward just so i dont have to do the driveshafts

I agree with 72chevyk10 , A t400 is longer than a t350, if moving the crossmember towards the rear is your choice you will have to shorten your rear driveshaft and have a new front one built, also you will have to move the transfer case shifter forward if you wish to keep it in the same stock location. also keep in mind that moving the crossmember back may interfere with your exhaust.

I'd just move the engine forward. There's plenty of room to the radiator and it will get the engine out of the firewall.
