Re: What manual transmission yall running

I'm drivin the old Muncie 3spd with the non-syncro first gear. There is a good thread around here that shows how to install a T5. I quickly read over it and may revisit it later. I like the Camaro trans but I'd rather have the S10 shifter position. I didn't look hard enough to see if the S10 shifter setup can go on the Camaro transmission.

It all matters on budget and intended uses:

--Do you want to go fast ....or will it be a working type truck, that carry's or pulls heavy loads ?

--Do you want to do a combination of both?

--What is your budget ?

Re: What manual transmission yall running

I grew up driving trucks with the SM-420 and SM-465 so those are the ones I have. The SM-420 is behind a L6 and the SM-465 is behind a 454.

The SM465 is what I have - the true classic truck tranny. Fun to drive, impossible to break.

If your set on a four speed there's ....
--Borg-Warner T10....now built new by Richmond
--Muncie M20 M21 M22
--Sm (Saginaw-Muncie) car
--Sm (Saginaw-Muncie) truck.....sm465 ,sm420....these are called granny gear four speeds due to the extra low stump pulling 1st gear. Great for hauling, towing and off road, but not acceleration . I had 1 in my dually and swapped it out for a built automatic.
--New Process "truck"...very much like above

--The first 2 are expensive ....and more performance oriented than you really need
--The truck granny 4 speeds are super tough...can still find good used one's .....I've got a sm465 in my driveway will sell cheap...

--none of the above have overdrive...4th gear on all is 1:1...that's the main problem, so......

--Here's the best bang for the buck ...I'd go with a Tremec T5 (5 speed)...easy to find, came in Camaro's, S10's and some other Gm cars and trucks. These are not the strongest transmissions out there, but there strong enough for a stock to mildly built small block. And here's the best part .....you'll have a true overdrive trans. and gas at $4.00+ a gallon you will appreciate that 5th gear. IMHO

T10 4spd from a early 80's camaro. Would recommend the 5 speed if you intend on driving distances.

Re: What manual transmission yall running

I put the T-5 in every truck I do. The T-5 is easy & cheap to convert. You get the advantage of the o-drive. Like the guys say they are not real stout but if you dont go doing burnouts or speed shifts they will stand up.
Yes you can put the S-10 tail houseing & shifter on a Camero trans. The Camero version is a little stronger & has closer gears.

This sounds like what I will look into does it require any mods or will bolt rite up?
What about the shifter should it line up where the hole is in the floor ok?

If you run a T5 from a Camaro, you will most likely need to run bucket seats. The shifted sits fairly far back and I would imagine you would either have to notch the bench seat or have a custom bent shifter.
