wheels space question

will a 10 in wheel with a 3 and 3/4 backspace fit a stock 1970 stepside without going outside of the fender?

Re: wheels space question

I have a stepper too and feel your pain. It's tough to find the 'right' wheel and know it will fit.

Check out 'Percy's Wheelrite' You can buy them at Summit, Jegs, etc. $69.95 but if you're going to put some money into wheels and tires (?) This is the best thing I have ever found to measure backspacing and wheel / tire size.

To answer your question above, I'm thinking no. I currently have 8" truck rallys on my truck with a 255/70/15 and it's right on the edge. (in my build thread) An 8" truck rally wheel has 4.25" backspacing I believe (?) On mine I laid the wheel and tire face down and used a straight edge across the widest point of the tire (the 'puffed out' part) You'll want to measure from the widest point of the tire (section width) to the mounting point of your wheel where it meets the hub. My truck and current wheel / tire combo is 5". I have about 3/4" clearance to the point the tire would rub the besdide.

* You may know? * Wheel backspacing is measured from the mounting point of the wheel to the outside of the wheel edge. The maximum width of the wheel from where it mounts, back. Ex. a 10" wheel is actually about 10.5" wide. The wheel itself is measured from the inside-to-inside of the tire bead. Where the tire meets the wheel.

So, with a 10" wheel and 3.75" back I don't think it will work and not go past the wheel lip. I have my step fenders off my truck and laid one flat on the garage floor to simulate the bedside if that makes sense. From the groun to the widest point of the wheel lip was 11.5" or so. Depending on the height of your truck (lowered?) and the size of the tires .. My vote is no.

Also, something else to note is the earlier build trucks have a narrower rear axle. Mine is 55.5" wide plate to plate. The later rear ends are 57" wide. If you have a later rear end you can add .75" to my measurements.

Hope this helps .. Chad
