Unhappy bad news

Well got some bad news on ol blue. I drove it to work last night and noticed it had lost some power. I get to work and parked it and saw white smoke comming from under the hood. So i poped it and found the culprit pcv valve blew outta the valve cover and blow by everywhere. Put the pcv valve back in the valve cover and started it. Ran perfect gave it a lil fuel and it did it again. So my guess is a broke piston or broke ring or combination of both. So now its not in service right now. But i did got to the junkyard today n got a 350 700r4 combo for 350 bucks. Good of an excuse as any to put a v8 in it. O well just another day in paradise

Sorry to hear the bad news about your motor.

Not to be a Jack A, but did you give the PVC a shake to listen for a rattle inside of it.

i had that happen once, my prob was i had a dummy style cap on the same side as the pcv and a oil cap on the opposite side of the motor. i replaced the dummy cap with a breather cap and was good. if the piston broke you'd know it by other means than smoke.

no i havnt shaken the pcv valve i just figured the engine was shot do to the massive amount of blow by ive got. its so bad when you drive it down the road it actually sucks up in the cab with you lol, ive been thinking about moving up to the 350/700 combo i guess this is just a good excuse. i do have a quick question when i do this swap can i use a lwb drive shaft from a 73-87 truck of am i gonna have to get a custom made one?

Hey I'm all up for upgrades. I think you will like the 350 and 700r4. It seems to be a very good combination.

With your current motor, I believe your PCV valve is stuck in a closed postition. Likely from it sitting so long. When you give the engine gas and the RPMs increase, pressure is built up inside of the motor. Well the engine has to relieve that pressure somehow. That is where your PCV valve comes in. There is a spring and small weight inside of it. At idle the spring keeps the weight in a down position. When you give it gas normally the pressure build up is vented out of the PCV valve thus forcing the weight against the spring opening up the valve. The gases are then routed into the carburetor to be burned off.

Since I believe your PCV valve is not working properly, the pressure build up simply pops the PCV valve our of the valve cover and thus blowing oil out.

I found this out the hard way too! Years ago I installed an Edelbrock carburator and manifold on my 327. Normally there is an oil fill tube in the front of the intake. That oil fill tube also allows the pressure build up to vent without letting alot of oil everywhere due to its height. Well the new manifold didn't have the oil fill tube. If I just drove it babying it along, all was fine. If I stepped on it, the pressure build up would blow out my intake manifolds end seals. Did the same thing your truck did and get oil everywhere and would start burning off. I replaced the end seals at least three times before I figured out I needed to run a PVC system.

Replace the PCV Valve and hose and see what happens.

well i got the ol inline pulled and the new motor sit in. deff been a learning experience. ive got to just but finishing touches on it now and get the driveshaft situation sorted out.
