Truck weight

OK, while at the Shades of The Past car show in Pigeon Forge, there was a Ride Tech booth setup. They brought their four corner scales with them and were weighing people's cars for free. I've always wanted to know how the weight bias was on these trucks, so I decided to give it a go.

Here's what they came up with.

I've always known trucks were front heavy, so there was no big surprise to me how much difference there was. I was kinda surprised at the hefty weight, however. I kinda figured things were closer to around 3500 lbs.

Either way, no complaints. Also the Ride Tech guys were really diggin my truck. They were asking lots of questions about it and complimenting on it alot as well.

Anyone else have any weight sheets like this you want to share?

Re: Truck weight

OK. Here's my setup in a nutshell.

-1968 Chevy C10 stepside

-350(iron heads)in forward V8 position
-TH350
-battery in stock location on pass side fender
-Kustom Tanks 16 gal. aluminum rear fuel tank under bed
-72 disc brakes with ECE drop spindles, stock 72 rear drum brakes on 72 truck 12 bolt
-72 power steering gearbox and pump
-17x8 TTII wheels, 255/50/17 Hankook tires
-17x9.5 TTII wheels, 275/55/17 Hankook tires
-69 CST bench seat with new custom foam(I listed this because stock benches are heavy)
-all original GM sheetmetal she wore from the factory except a Goodmark hood, right front fender, front bed panel, an NOS tailgate, and aftermarket chromed front and rear bumpers.

- This shouldn't matter for weight purposes, but it has 3.5/5.75 drop using 2.5" drop spindles and 1" drop springs in front and 5" drop srpings and 3/4" drop blocks in the rear.

Re: Truck weight

That is very interesting 68stepbed. So we're about 60/40 and 3700 lbs with rear tank and fwd engine position. Can you say 'plow' thru the corners?

Wonder how much difference the rear engine mount position would make? Probably not much considering the engine is pretty far forward and the position would not be that much different.

P.S. Sweet truck. The color and TTII's look great.

Re: Truck weight

Very pretty truck, and good data.

The only other question I have is: do you remember how much fuel was in it when they weighed it? That makes a big difference, too -

-and they weighed it without you in it?

BTW - my racecar weighs 3950 (with me in it)

Re: Truck weight

Its a lightweight. I had to weigh mine to get title/registered and it was 4,400 lbs. IIRC. Beautiful truck; I love the wheels too!

Re: Truck weight

Right and left sides equal 1,867 each.

Front is about 50lbs heavier on drivers side probably because of steering box

Rear is slightly moreon passenger side. That one I can't guess other than the rear tank

Re: Truck weight

Hey guys, thanks for all the compliments!! The color is PPG Atlantic Blue pearl. It's a color from the 04-08 Dodge Ram trucks. Let me see if I can answer a few more of these questions.

First off, I think the engine moved back into the 6cyl mount position would make a dramatic improvement. Maybe not so much in weight bias, but in the fact it sits lower and farther back. Overall "feel" on curvy roads or on an auto-x would be much different.

The fuel tank was almost full. I filled up before going to the show. Yes, they weighed without me in it. The numbers would be ALOT different if I had my fat butt in it. In all honesty, though, it would probably be a good idea to get the weights with me in it just to see what difference it makes on total weight bias.

With the extra components like steering coumn, gearbox, linkage and such, I can understand why the left front is about 50 lbs. heavier than the right front. I can't seem to understand, however, how the right rear is almost 50lbs heavier than the left rear.

I may be planning to do an LSx swap this winter. If so, I'm gonna try to get mounts that move the engine as far back as possible with the stock firewall. It would be interesting to see what kind of difference the LSx engine would make. I may also look into moving the battery under the bed on the framerail, somehow. That would help the weight bias as well.

Re: Truck weight

My engine is in the 6 cyl location, and Just looking at it, I beat it would make a noticable different on the scales. It would be nice if we could have an equal comparison.

Re: Truck weight

According to the government asset tag on my glovebox, the curb weight of my truck was 3485. It was a bare bone swb step 250/3spd

Why is your left front heavier than your right front? And why is your left rear lighter than your right rear?
