1971 Blazer w/ factory pop up camper
All, I am new and uninformed. I have a opportunity to get a 1971 Blazer that is in great shape, but has the factory pop up camper. My question for y'all is how difficult/costly would it be to remove the camper portion and just have the Blazer. Ideally I would like to turn the camper part into something that can be replaced for family camping trips. I do not have pictures yet and have not come up with too much info online. The experience I have been having is that these good deals go very quickly so I am wondering if it is really worth time and money or should I just keep shopping. Thanks for the help

Re: 1971 Blazer w/ factory pop up camper
Everything came from a factory, the question is which factory? The Blazer came from the GM factory, the camper came from the camper factory, it did not come from the GM factory. GM didn't offer a pop-up camper for the 69-72 Blazers. Nevertheless, it's probably pretty cool.
Without pictures or even looking at it it's tough to tell how easily it will come off. If it's a camper made for a 69-72 Blazer I would think it would come right out with no problem. If it's been modified to fit you might run across a problem, but probably nothing significant. That camper might be worth a few hundred dollars too.

Re: 1971 Blazer w/ factory pop up camper
Four wheel camper made one for the first gens. There are likely a few people, myself included who would love to get their hands on one. It should remove pretty easily and could be replaced with the standard single or double wall top.

I have made a deal with the seller and hope to go pick it up soon. I am very excited, but still a little apprehensive. Thanks for the help and I will post some pictures when I get her in Texas.

Re: 1971 Blazer w/ factory pop up camper
That is definitely a Four Wheel Pop Up camper.
It should have some camper jacks that slide under the sides. It won't have the attached legs like the newer ones. It will lift right out and you will have a normal blazer - minus the top but any single or double wall top will fit. Depends on what it came with because the bolt holes are not the same for the two tops. Four Wheel went out of business but it looks like someone resurrected the brand: http://www.fourwheelcampers.com I had a couple of them in the past and they are/were very good campers and low profile - which to me is a bonus. I think you will be very happy with your new toys.

Re: 1971 Blazer w/ factory pop up camper
Hey Open Road, Its funny I was buying that same truck from Rita in Golden. I was going to fly in and drive it home. She was bringing it down to carl's gas station to fix a few things and gave me his phone number to call today and talk with him about the condition. Just be careful. You can buy it but I smell a scam now. Good Luck and I hope its not all rotten underneath.

Re: 1971 Blazer w/ factory pop up camper
Hmmm. I alerted "Open road" to this directly via email just now, he'd contacted me through the address I have at blazerchalet.com about what was meant by 'factory camper', so I gave him detailed info on the differences between the aftermarket campers and the '76-'77 GM factory popups, which technically were 'sorta-factory' since Chinook had set of some kind of assembly place near or in Flint when they were putting together the Chalets and Casa Grandes.
I do hope to get more info on that someday, the history of the GM factory ones is awfully sketchy. Chinook was an entertaining place over its lifespan, as can be seen in this history: http://www.tincantourists.com/wiki/doku.php?id=chinook
