Bought a 65 GMC c10 need help on few things such as primer/filler
Bought a 1965 GMC c10. It needs a few things cosmeticly. Floors have holes, needs HUGE patch on left front fender and needs a few extra things. So for my first question. I need help on restoring the box. I am going to remove and fix up any thing that needs to be welded. After that I will mebe if I should fill dings in box with a body filler. Then prime? I think. I will paint it in a year or so. So the primer with just keep it from rusting further and make it look half finished. I live in canada so paint companys may differ. I need some names of fillers/primers. The truck will not be a jackson action truck as I dont have that money. But I will get it painted ( coler and clear) done right. I need help on what to start with and what products are decent and are not super expensive.
I bought the truck two days ago and am going to pick it up tomorrow morning. I will have pics then. I drove it around a feild. It has a freshly rebuilt 292 and it runs pretty good. Needs exhaust and a gasket in the transmition as it leaks a little. I will be driving it 15-20km home. Frame is fantastic. Wood in box is almost not even there. I need a few heater parts I thing Il get some pics of that to. Basicly im looking to prepare it for paint and keep it from rusting further. Thanks! |

start a build thread and then post your questions in the paint and body work section and I am sure you will get all the answers to any questions you have.... we need pictures!!!

Re: Bought a 65 GMC c10 need help on few things such as primer/filler
to start, work with the best surface you can. Some guys have the luxury of having the whole thing blasted or stripped..but that isn't always in the budget. If you are going to do it one section at a time, I would suggest a sealer not a primer. Primer is still porous, and water will seep in and still rust from the back. Sealer gives a harder non-porous coating that will keep water and uv off of the underlying filler. Then when your ready you can lightly sand it back and spray your primer or filler primer to get build....finish sanding then spray your color. It also gives you a nice consistent base to paint on, even over different materials.
