tranny cable adjustment

anybody post or step me through on how to adjust the tranny cable..... mine seems to hold in gear a tad too long for my liking and also when I step on the throttle it won't kick down until I practically put my foot through the floor board.... just want the kick down to be looser.... any help

Re: tranny cable adjustment

If you have a 700R4, DO NOT CHANGE SHIFT POINTS WITH THE TV CABLE! Use the governor to change shift points. You will smoke the 700R4 if the TV cable isn't set correctly.

I learned a lot from reading this.

TH350s are as easy as can be to set up.
ENGINE OFF.
There is a black tab behind the bracket the TV cable clips into on the intake manifold. Lift it up.
With your other hand move the throttle on the carb to wide open throttle.
With carb at WOT, push the black tab down.
Let go of the throttle.
You're done.

Re: tranny cable adjustment

Re: tranny cable adjustment

That's the one. The tab is on the backside of that orange bracket. Sometimes fun to get at. Push up from the bottom on the cable and the tab should pop up. Open the throttle all the way, hold it there and push the tab back down.

Nope. Follow that cable to where it is inserted in that orange bracket towards the back of the intake manifold. Behind where the square piece is inserted is a black tab. That tab is pulled UP, move carb to WOT, push tab back down while still at WOT.

Re: tranny cable adjustment

if it still holds the gear a bit too long under normal driving, then you'll probably want to adjust the vacum modulator.

where and how do i adjust the modulator....I will try that after I adjust the kick down.... I know for sure the kick down needs adjusting...got to stand on it pretty hard to get her to kick down...so as soon as I can get someone over to put the pedal to the floor I will adjust.... I guess I cam probably do it with my free hand....

Re: tranny cable adjustment

You can actuate the trottle from under the hood by hand for the cable adjustment.
I would drive it a few days and see what you think. If you still need to adjust the part throttle upshifft, then jack up the truck, locate the modulator, unplug the vac line off of it. Take a flashlight and look in the hose nipple hole. Some are allen wrench, most are flat head screws.... reach in there with what ever tool is needed, screw it in to raise the shift point, out to lower it.
Some are not adjustable. If it is not adjustable, then you can get one pretty cheap at a parts store (inspect for adjustability before paying) I have personally never seen one that was not adjustable, but I hear about them suposedly being more common.

Re: tranny cable adjustment

so here is the deal.... I got the plastic piece to pop up and was like ok, pushed it back down and when my son got home I went out and asked him to step on the pedal....so I reached back and tried to pull the plastic piece up, it would not come up...my fingers are sore trying to get it popped up and now it is dark.... any ideas

Re: tranny cable adjustment

Pry it with a small screwdriver. You don't have to have someone step on the gas... just pull the tab up... move the throttle to WOT by hand, and then snap the tab back down.

Re: tranny cable adjustment

ok thanks.....it pops straight up right.... cause all I did the first time was take both fingers one on each side and lift up and it moved right up but after snapping it back in place I could not get the darn thing to pop back up again...
