Is anyone running a 1 ton 4x4 dually?

Hey guys I'm currently looking at a 1 ton single cab 4x4 dually.

I currently have a single cab 2wd half ton fleetside. So that is all I can compare to. Figured I would ask someone that actually has a 1 ton.

How would the ride be on the 1 ton single cab 4x4 dually?
Would a sb400 be enough to get it down the road and haul trailers with?

Thanks!

(Trying to get away from the hot rod style truck and more to a work truck.)

I have a 350 in mine and it will plow snow, haul at least 2 tons of material and it rides well for a "big" truck. all in stock condition. Buy it!

Thanks for the feedback! I still got to work out a few things but I'm leaning towards buying it.

Re: Is anyone running a 1 ton 4x4 dually?

How will it ride?
Like an iron-wheeled wagon.
What will it pull/haul?
Anything you want.
They're a truck and ride like one. But they're some damned hard workin' trucks.
It probably has 4.11 cogs, won't be much for highway use.
What year? '87 - '88 are TBI and can run the 4L80E with a wiring harness update.
If it doesn't already have 'em, add headers. They're the biggest bang for the buck, hot rod or work truck.

The truck is an '81. I will be putting a '76 SB400 in it. (With headers!)

I have a 76 1 ton dually with a 496 I just put in it. I love the thing, rough riding ? Yes. But who cares that motor should be OK but it will be working it's ass off.

Re: Is anyone running a 1 ton 4x4 dually?

Well it looks like all the guys that do have 1 tons really love them. So would the SB400 be unempresive? My SB400 should be making around 550 lbs of torque... Is that not enough?

Are there any tricks to giving the 1 tons a better ride?

I don't really need a 1 ton, I just love this truck. Different leaf springs maybe?

SB400 will be a hoss, swap to Vortec heads if you have the chance. Make sure you have a good radiator and water pump and it'll be fine.
I'm building a 489 for my '97 CC dually 4X4, sure looking forward to it. May end up with a turbo down the road...

Re: Is anyone running a 1 ton 4x4 dually?

both of mine rides decent for a 1 ton, mine are both crewcab's so I got a little more wheel base, that helps some.
if you want it to ride like a half ton, air bag it. with the right set up it will haul more wheight and ride good .

Rough riding, bad gas mileage, pull like a son of a gun.

Re: Is anyone running a 1 ton 4x4 dually?

I'm doing a '97 crewcab dually 4x4, lowering it about 3", losing the bottom fat overload leaf and adding helper bags. I'm figuring it'll ride like a heavy half, pull like hell with the port injected 489!

Re: Is anyone running a 1 ton 4x4 dually?

My 1 ton is a 79, 4x4, dually, dana 60 3.73 traclok front, dana 70 3.73 powerlok rear, 454 tbi, 465, 205. I don't piss blood when finish driving it, BUT when I hook to SERIOUS loads, WE may stop moving, BUT the wheels DON'T stop SMOKING. If you're serious about not owning a "boy" truck, 1 ton speaks for it self. Ron

sorry for quality, Ron

I got some after market heads on it (not vortecs, they are dart heads) and I got a Be Cool stock replacement aluminum radiator with dual electric fans. So I hope that's enough

One more question....
Crew cab or single cab..? Big weight difference or no?

Re: Is anyone running a 1 ton 4x4 dually?

If that 400sb is putting out 500+ ft lbs of torque it would be about even with a factory big block with a mild cam so I think it would be just fine a lot of 1 ton trucks in my area have completely stock sb350s and do just fine

Re: Is anyone running a 1 ton 4x4 dually?

Sounds a lot like the 406 I'm building for my '77 K-5 with Bowtie Vortec heads. You'll have more power than most stock big block trucks, better mileage, too.

Re: Is anyone running a 1 ton 4x4 dually?

I'll probably jinx myself, but we're currently looking at a 79 K30 3+3 4x4 dually (that's a lot of alphanumerics!) with 454, 4 speed and 4.56 gears as the new tow rig.

It would just about be the perfect all around truck, except for parking at the mall.

Will post pics if it works out. My only concern is the 4.56s...that's a lot of gear for the highway!

Re: Is anyone running a 1 ton 4x4 dually?

Only thing I worry about at the mall is door dings. Kind of the reason I want a flat bed. I little harder to tear up.

I'm thinking the same thing. Perfect truck that I can actually use as a truck! I have a half ton but I want a truck that will be ready for any job when I'm ready to put my truck to work. A half ton has its limits.

I do have the same worry about the low gears on the highway not really for fuel mileage but more so for the wear on the engine and trani from being at such s high rpm. I have an impala for fuel mileage...
