1986 chevy universal joints

I am putting in new u joints on my 86 stepside. I did not remember these from other square bodies, but, there is a plastic "sleeve" inside the yoke and drive shaft ends where the cap of the u joint goes. The new u joints from Oreilly did not come with this plastic ring. Do I have to replace this part? I do have the metal "keepers".

Re: 1986 chevy universal joints

those are the factory U Joints.. on my 86 u used a plumber torch to burn out the plastic then a press to pop out the old u joints . once you have those out you press in the new ones and make sure you put in the clips to hold in the joints.
Make sure you grease the u joints up good so you dont lose any needle bearings

I have never bothered to try to remove the plastic. It just shears off when you press them out. It goes back together with only the metal clips.
