Stepside Rear Fender: Should the lights be brake lights or blinkers?

hey all, just wondering what ya think the "in-fender" rear lights should be, blinkers or brake lights? i believe they were red to start, but if i already have rear mounted brake lights, shouldnt the side makrers on the rear fenders be blinkers?

Not sure I follow you. Are you talking about the side marker lights? Those are single element and operate as running lights.

On an unmodified '68, they're just reflectors.

unless optional side marker lights were ordered. Then they were as described above, side marker lights, wired in with the tail lights.

I wasn't on the production line back then so I can't say for sure, but as I remember, that option wasn't available until '69. Not sure about the '70 model year. By '71, wired-in side markers were standard.
Of course, anyone with some wiring skills could have installed lights into their reflectors, at anytime along this timeline, but I don't think it was factory until '69.

Re: Stepside Rear Fender: Should the lights be brake lights or blinkers?

was a factory option in 68, and if you got dual rear wheels, it was a required option(at extra cost) along with the clearance lights atop the cab, all per federal DOT regulations.

You can look at any lens to find first year of production on these trucks. The standard marker lamps on my '71 Custom Deluxe say '68.

I'm still wondering what the O.P. is wanting to know. Is your question answered?

He is talking about the side marker lights guys being brake lights...no! They should be either blinkers are just reflectors. Take your pick. I'm not that well versed on which one it is though sorry.

LWB trucks rule, if you don't think so measure your SWB!
After talking to tech support at Air Lift I have found out that the kit I need is 60811. Per the measurements I gave them. Ride height of truck inside spring and inside diameter of springs.

side markers in back never blinked till the last few years. Steady burning with the parking lights/tail lights

Did the back ones blink? On my '71 the front side markers blink with the turn signals in the front bumper, but the back markers do not blink with the taillights.

The front side markers blink alternately with the turn signals, not with them. The rear side markers are only running lights.

Re: Stepside Rear Fender: Should the lights be brake lights or blinkers?

the front side markers... this gets interesting.
Some trucks (69 and 70) from some plants, were steady burn with the parking lights. Most did blink, after 71 they all did. (I did a poll on this 6 or 7 years ago, wish I could find it)
As for blinking with or alternately from the turn signals, it alll depends on if the parking lights are on.
If the lights are off, then they blink together.
If the parking lights are on, then they blink alternately.
