230 not running right
Hi guys , here's the deal. My 230 inline 6 is popping thru the exhaust every now and then. I removed 1 plug lead at a time to hear any difference in running. Numbers 5 and 6 don't seem to change the way the engine runs when I remove one of these leads. Next step change leads no change. swap plugs no change . compression test al cylinders between 115 and 120 psi.
Removed valve cover and checked to see push rods loose on these cylinders in their firing position all good. tightened manifold . Scratching my head, now any ideas ? Thanks in advance for any imput Cheers Matt |

Re: 230 not running right
Another ? Is the pcv valve in this model not really a valve ? it looks just like a restrictor , a small hole in 1 end ?

Re: 230 not running right
if all the cylinders comp. test the same , then that rules out a head gasket , I would look for a carbon track in the dist. cap .. or pull the wire away from the plug while it is running , if the plug is bad it will make the coil work harder and sometimes may get the plug to fire.. when you shorted the plug wires could you heard it sparking to the plug ? also if you ever have 2 cylinders that share an intake port that dont fire check for a vacuum leak.. just spray some carb cleaner around the intake/head area... I had one last week where someone put the pcv valve in a vacuum port on the rear of the intake in a runner .. that place is reserved for the brake booster... pcv goes under the carb....

Re: 230 not running right
On mine it turned out to be the intake exhaust gasket leaking, these are hard to get sealed up right and torqued down properly. Also could be the round brisket gasket in the head pipe if these let air in it will pop on compression. Good luck...Vernski

Re: 230 not running right
Yes I can hear spark jumping to ground when I remove leads from plug.
From what you guys are saying its heading towards a manifold leak . I'll have to check that out when I get a chance. Are there any better manifold gaskets that I can buy ? bearing in mind I don't have the luxury of chev parts in a local auto sparts store. |
