Square Body Burb Tank In Longbed?

I was thinking,I never heard anyone doing this and wondered if it's doable. I have the larger tank w/skid-plate in my '91 Suburban I'm parting and wonder if I could make it work in my '72 K2500. It now has the two saddle tanks and I'm thinking to go Fenderside with it. The 'Burb tank is 34 gallon,so I'd also eliminate the stock tank so I can put speaker boxes I have back there.
Has anyone used a 73-91 Suburban or Blazer tank in a 67-72 longbed? They are bigger than 67-72 'Burb/Blazers,which fit shortbeds. It seems safe to assume a larger tank could work in a longbed.

Some of us have mounted the later 31 gallon EFI Blazer tanks in our 67-72 Suburbans. On mine I moved one crossmember and it fits snugly between the framerails. Frame dimensions are pretty close between Suburban and LWB.

Re: Square Body Burb Tank In Longbed?

Thank Beezleburb. That's good enough for me. Not sure if this isn't a 31 gallon. I have to check again. As I recall it was an optional bigger capacity. But,I believe the length and width are the same and it's just taller/deeper. The K2500 is getting a lift,so not concerned with ground clearance anyway.
Did you spin the tank a 1/2 turn to get the filler on the driver side? On another note. I have the 4L80E/NP241 from the Suburban also that I may end up using. How did you handle the speedometer? I guess you have an engine/trans ECM. My Suburban is a diesel with transmission ECM. Both would need something done to get a speedo. I'd probably get the electronic to mechanical convertor vs GPS. Might consider custom gauges and do an electronic speedo.

Re: Square Body Burb Tank In Longbed?

As far as the filler, I actually had a local guy relocate the filler neck to the driver side and fill the old hole. I think Mosesburb might have just spun the tank around on his.

Here's a picture of mine before the body went on:

I simply looped a long piece of hose to get the vent line over to the driver's side as well. The fuel hardlines came from a late eighties / early nineties pickup or Suburban and fit really well on the passenger side framerail. In the photo you can also see where I moved the original crossmember back and added another (from a 67-72 LWB pickup) in front of the tank. That way I could get the tank up as high as possible for ground clearance, still have space for a hidden hitch and the tank didn't interfere with the movements of the differential. Plus, it secures nicely on the stock rub-strips. I'm also using the stock 31 gallon tank straps with some couplers.

As far as the 4L80/NP241, my speedometer is actually a programmable AutoMeter electronic unit. You could go that route, or keep the stock gauges and run something like the Cable X. My engine and ECM came from an '88 truck with a TH400, so it only controlled two transmission functions. To handle the 4L80's shifting I have a Compushift controller. You're already one step ahead though, having the PCM that controls both.
