Painting Master Cylinder

First I know this isn't for my truck but at least its a chevy! I am painting the master cylinder and steering components on my 67 camaro and want them to look like bare metal but have protection. My question is, has anyone used something out of a rattle can to paint something similar and had good luck with it?

Re: Painting Master Cylinder

Eastwood has what you need.

http://www.eastwood.com/ew-brake-gra...sol-13-oz.html

They have other products to make the finish look like Aluminum, Steel, Iron, Zinc, Cad, cast, machined, etc.

http://www.eastwood.com/ew-underhood-detailing-kit.html

Kinda pricey but I have used them for years and always been happy with the finished product. Lots of solid content in the paint so a can goes a long way.

Buy an aluminum M/C and be done with rust.

I have always painted mine with a cast aluminum spray paint.

(I've got to do the one on my new 72 this weekend)

Re: Painting Master Cylinder

If you use spray bomb paint ....don't get brake fluid on it or it's more than likely bubble and flake off. Spray can paint is "non catalyzed"...so is not very chemically resistant. If your careful, it is a quick and cheap way to make something pretty though.

Never tried the Eastwood paint, it does say "resistant" to dot 3 fluid, so it may be worth a try.

Re: Painting Master Cylinder

use paint for calipers sold in autoparts stores local// it will hold up better for brake parts

Re: Painting Master Cylinder

I used POR metal mask. Supposed to be impervious to fuels & chemicals, not sure on brake fluid though. Stuff isn't cheap but it goes a long way.

It looks just like the bare cast metal though.

actually aluminum oxidizes faster than steel, it's just not as ugly about it. I'd rather paint steel than have to constantly clean or polish aluminum on a driver. I painted my aluminum heads on my 5.3 after 3 years it still looks better than most 3 month old ls swaps.

I agree, it seems I have to polish the diamond plate on my bed almost as often as the paint , but rough cast aluminum has no shine....it does start to lose the bright aluminum color after a while though, and can be difficult to get back without harsh chemicals. One thing that will brighten cast aluminum is Castrol super clean....just have to be very careful not to get it on anything shiny and make sure the surface is cool to the touch, when used in higher concentrations. Don't ask me why I just know.

Re: Painting Master Cylinder

Thanks guys! Just got back from a trip.

JWall - I like the look of that Dupi-color, I'm just worried about it holding up to the Brake Fluid. I think I'm going to be careful and give it a try though.

Re: Painting Master Cylinder

What's the best way to prep the cylinder before painting with eastwood brake gray? Was thinking scotch brute pad should do the truck to get rid of the nasty surface rust and possible brake clean and a good wipe down?

I used clear satin high temp paint. Has lasted for a LITTLE while with no problems, but the jure (me) is still out.... Looks perfectly natural of course, so that's a good.

Re: Painting Master Cylinder

regardless of what you paint it with, it will need to be cleaned/degreased thoroughly. I use Eastwood's "PRE" before I do stuff like this.

Talking Re: Painting Master Cylinder

Mine isn't any of the above. I used good old red paint out of the spray can.

I cleaned it good with wire brush and brake cleaner 2 times then let dry for a few days. 2 years now and it looks just as good.

The date is correct for this picture.
I sprayed it with clear also.

I would use something a little stronger myself. Mineral spirits would work to I guess. Brake cleaner are like the other's suggested East wood stuff.
