Steel rims redrill

I've seen rims cut to go wider and thiner, so why the conflict with redrilling... there has been a few post about redrilling but all I see is NO you can't redrill steel rims... So I figure ill start this one to see what everyone has to say on the subject in one thread....

Why would you want to redrill the holes?? Get a set of adapters or order the right rims. Or redrill the drums and flange.

I'm not sure what you have in mind, but the stock bolt holes aren't just drilled through, they are stamped to provide a raised seat for the tapered lug nuts. Just drilling a hole through the hub won't give you the same grip and centering that the stock holes provide. Results could be very dangerous.

I'm not. Drilling my rally rims but they are steel... I'm not drilling them out myself.. but there are so great machine shop in the area... Not just so mom and pops

It is more than just having a great shop. There need to be the rolled taper seat to lock the lug nut, which machining will not give you. It does not matter how you plan to race the truck or not if the lug nuts will not hold in regular driving (if you have ever had a wheel come off it is an eye raising experience). Redrilling the steel rim is not the way to go, either make adapters (not great), have the axles drilled to the rim s pattern (best), or get rims with the correct pattern.

I dont think i would go there. The wheels are held on by the clamping force of the lugs. The shape of the hole or the "raised portion" has a lot to do with the bolt maintaining that tension. I can relate to the challenge of finding decent steel wheels, but hold out for the right set-up. Youll be happier in the end.

If you are feeling the pain of limited wheel choices, have your rotors, axles, and drums re drilled for 5x4.75. You get a lot more wheel options that way.

Why are you so dead set on doing something that everyone's tells you not to do? I'm not sure what other forums you refer to, but I can tell you about this one. In general our Senior members will not recommend any modifications that are potentially unsafe.

Yes you can physically redrill steel rims to fit the bolt pattern and hub diameter. That still does not account for improper seating of the lug nuts. It can be done, but it won't be safe.

There used to be a shop here and I'm sure there are others out there that can cut out the center section of a steel wheel and weld in a new one. That would be the proper and safe method. Doing it this way you can adjust the offset for a custom application. I had several sets of Rallyes done back when this shop was in Tulsa. They could put in new centers or new outers either one.

I used a place in Tulsa @ one point in time back years ago for custom width & back-spaced, steel, vette (car) style wheels. I think they were call 'Ralley America' or something like that.

The place I was referring to was called Fast Wheels, they did a lot of wheels for stock cars, but had rallye centers. I had a set of 4" Rallyes done for the front of my 80 Malibu and a set of 8.5s done for the back. That was probably the place, it was the only one I remember. They did a ton of business, can't imagine why they couldn't make it.

I did similar.... 5" fronts & 10" rears.
