53 GMC ammeter

I have heard that when switching from a pos ground to a neg ground in a GMC you need to reverse the wires on the ammeter, the other day I was surfing and found a site that said that it does not need to be switched because the ammeter doesn't care witch direction the current is flowing. That doesn't sound right to me so I'm asking the all knowing on the board.
I am converting my 53 GMC suburban to 12v neg ground, the 12v I have done before so that's not an issue but the reversing grounds I have not.

Re: 53 GMC ammeter
