Exhaust options!!!

Alright, my 86 pick up is in dire need of exhaust replacement. Was sitting in the backyard for 10yrs. and is falling apart. It is already a dual exhaust. Want something that isnt too loud. I dont know what is good out there. Any suggestions as to mufflers and tubing.

Re: Exhaust options!!!

I bit the bullet on this and spent $500.00 but it included everything from the collectors back...... I think the flow masters can be bought at most auto parts store houses I wasn't confident enough to try and tackle a task this big.

Re: Exhaust options!!!

I have magnaflows on my dually and it sounds great no drone noise inside the cab but still has that mello tone outside and it sounds good when your in the throttle flowmasters are great deep mellotones but if your looking for a quieter sound i suggest the magnaflows

Re: Exhaust options!!!

I'm running Thrush Welded mufflers on mine. 2 1/4" pipes, long tube headers. True dual setup, exits before the rear tires with a 4 - 4 1/2" tip. Sounds really mean. "Pissed Off" is actually a better description. It's relatively loud all the way through the RPM range. It's even loud at idle. My neighbors hate me.

Re: Exhaust options!!!

Contact local exhaust shops in your area, may be cheaper than you think.

I believe I went with a cheap kit from Summit, but in New England, I had planned on changing the exhaust every few years.

Dual 2-1/4" pipe, just over the rear end, (snowbank said it wasn't going behind rear wheels anymore), cheap turbo mufflers.

I'm kinda like duct tape- no real purpose, but handy to have around.

Could we get some pics of the exhaust routing? I've got an 86 reg cab short bed and wanna go out the side right before the rear tire too. But the gas tanks butt right up to the spring hanger so it looks like id have to go under the tanks/hangers...?
Thanks! Dan

Re: Exhaust options!!!

ive change things a little with my truck i had some cherrybomb turbos sitting around so i welded one on when i had the 350 in the truck the muffler poped open so i swoped the engine to the 383 ... good reason hu!! and got some headers from summit 2.5 collecter, pipes go over the crossmember to a h pipe then to thrush welded mufflers and then 2.5 to 3 inch adapter 90* bend threw the bed, straight back and up real simple, most of the pipe i just mesures what i wonted and whent to the exhaust shop and had bent i think i spent 200 at most had clapers but they got real anoying at stop lights but yea when its cold out it blows smoke rings and when the tires are screaming i cant hear them lol oh and i hung it all on the front 2 bed bolts i cut a pice of angle drilled a copple holes and used exhaust clamps the u welded to the pipe and the other peice welded to the angle theres no bushings and i got solid engine/trans mounts so they dont wiggle much and i had a plate bent used 4 clamps and put that in the bed to keep the stacks square

Re: Exhaust options!!!

I run Pypes mufflers on both of my trucks. Blazer has a 2 1/2" system with Pypes Race Pro mufflers, and my pickup truck has a 3" system with Pypes Street Pro mufflers.

Both systems are custom bent with H-pipes installed, just the mufflers are store bought.

I have cars here with flowmaster, SLP, etc...and I've really taken a liking to the Pypes mellow sounds while cruising, only making some noise when you romp on it, no interior drone, overall a nice muffler, but I'm getting old

Re: Exhaust options!!!

Flowmaster = loud exhaust
Magnaflow = more power and performance exhaust sound

Re: Exhaust options!!!

The drone of loud exhaust gets to my ears after a while. Stock exhaust or stainless steel exhaust all the way with pipes turned out the sides under the rear quarter panels works best for me.
