Engine Ticking

OK guys just got the 72 C10 350 rebuilt and in the truck. I have an engine test stand and it ran perfect and runs perfect now that it is in the truck. Except for the fact that I have a ticking sound, its not an exhaust leak, I thought the valves needing adjusting again and that would fix it. Well I did it while running and once the slack was out I turned it another 3/4 turn. And I must say don't want to do it again while the engine is running what a freaking mess oil everywhere. Anyway I can't get the ticking out. When I first crank it up there is not ticking but after a couple of minutes it starts ticking. If I go in lets say to get something at the store for 5-10 minutes and come out crank it no ticking then after a couple of minutes it comes back. Does anyone have any ideas here is my setup.

350 bored .040 over
E-Street 2.02 Aluminum Heads
HE Comp 268 Cam
Flat Top Pistons
About 9.3 to 1 Compression
Edelbrock 600 CFM Carb
Edelbrock Aluminum Intake
1.5 Roller Rockers
Headers

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Re: Engine Ticking

Could be a bad lifter (compressed with slow rebound) or poor flow to lifter. A lifter without oil will tick until it gets it. Just a guess without actually hearing it. Good luck.

Re: Engine Ticking

I have had a fuel pump to peck and sound just like a lifter. Use a long piece of heater hose to try to locate the source of the tick.

Re: Engine Ticking

What type of rocker are you using? do you have a part number? Is it possible that your valvetrain may be setup incorrectly?

The E-street heads use a guide plate and hardened push rods. If you are using this setup then you need to use non-self aligning rockers or you will bind the push rod. My understanding is that the bound up push rod cannot move as fast as it should as the valve opens and closes and this can cause a tick or tapping because it is allowing too much clearance between valvetrain components.... It can also cause the push-rod to fail which causes a he77 of a mess.

If you are not using guide plates then you may need to run self aligning rockers.... You would have to contact Edelbrock on that....

Re: Engine Ticking

Also, check the roller tip on those rockers, they can wear out and loosen up causing a tick or tap...

Re: Engine Ticking

Hey guys thanks for all of the great advice to check but just letting everyone know I have found what was causing the problem so for anyone who has this problem. I put a set of Summit Brand stamped steel roller tip rocker arms on the engine and have had a ticking noise ever since. I checked for exhaust leaks none, reset the valves atleast 4 times still ticking. So I changed the rocker arms to a set of stock stamped steel rocker arms and no more ticking. Once I tool the roller tips off I noticed the pivot ball wasn't contacting the arms correctly on all of them was wearing on about 20-30% of the surface where it should be 100% contact. But just letting everyone know what the problem was and that Summit Racing stamped roller tips suck and are noisy as hell.

Re: Engine Ticking

I have comp aluminum roller rocker arms, and they are noisy as well they have that sewing machine sound. just something I have learned to live with. I am glad it wasn't your cam or lifters

Re: Engine Ticking

Had a similar problem with summit roller rocker arms. Roller tip came out on one side - tick, tick, tick... Found it before it did any damage.

Now, I run comp cam rollers-self aligning. No problems.
