Unhappy washer fluid pump

Is there a trick to priming the washer fluid pump? When I go to spray the windshield, I can hear the pump working but nothing comes out. I'm assuming it just needs to be primed because the reservoir was bone dry when I got the truck.

If you pull the inlet hose off of the washer reservoir, you can inject water into the hose while you try the pump, (a helper is needed). Sometimes it it is the "O" rings in the pump, but my experience has been that the piston leaks. If the piston leaks you will get fluid running into the floor usually from the pump.
