Installing a I6

a few years back I picked up two I6 engines. I'm looking to install one of thim into a Short Step project.

All i have is the engine and each have an automatic flywheel attached.

What is the easiest transmission to use with this engine? auto or manual?

Turbo 350 or three speed?

I also have access to the three on the tree that came out of a 68 307 truck. If I decide to go manuel will this bolt up with a clutch and flywheel change?

Would the flywheel from the 307 work?

I also have access to several Turbo 350's a 400 and even an early four speedd

Just looking to make something to putt around with.

What is the easiest transmission to use with this engine? auto or manual? Depends on the truck, imo, if set up for stick a stick would be easy to install, if not with the auto, no worries of linkage

Turbo 350 or three speed? 3 speed are no fun but th350, may take more power to turn

Re: Installing a I6

I have a 250 three speed on the column on mine. Yeah, it's fun and it's different but an automatic would make it easier to drive. It's always fun when I take it in for inspection and the young guys don't know how to drive it.

Your gas mileage is not going to be that good regardless of which trans you use. If you intend to do any towing, go with the automatic. I used a 350 on my 69 and it towed really well with a 350 engine. I'm not familiar enough with the 400's to give an opinion but have heard they're good, strong transmissions.

Bottom line, if you want to be different, go with the 3 on the column, if you want convenience go with the automatic. It's really personal choice.

forgot: with an auto, make sure you have the radiator to go with it also.
