Can you pull the key out with the motor running? I assume something is worn in my ignition switch as I have discovered that I can. Are the switches readily available?

Yes,
Yours is not broken.
It works that way by design.
Theyswitches are available, I beleive the tumbler is separate item from the switch. your door locks and ignition will be different if you just change the tumbler in the ignition.
There are kits out there which have doors,ignition and glove box keys all keyed the same.
Even the replacements will allow the key to be removed while the motor is running.
Others feel free to correct me if I am wrong on this line of thought.

What Hutch said. Mine works that way also. Found out by accident when my fingers got tangled in the keys. Just slipped out. Scared the you know what outta me. Tried again later on purpose with no problems. Now I am just careful not to have too heavy of a set of keys attached. Matched sets of door/glove box/ignition are available from most major catalog retailers.

They only come out when the key is worn out. If you take a new key as in original condition it will not come out unless the ignition switch is in the off position. It can actually be dangerouse to not have a way to turn off your engine in a hurry but I will admit it is darn handy to be able to take the key out sometimes.
