Rebuild or buy new?

I took apart the calipers on s10 frame today and planned on rebuilding them.but the bore has a some corrosion/pitting in it.. Should I just knock down the highs and install new piston and o rings or just buy new calipers? Ive never rebuilt calipers so im not sure whats useable or what should just be let go..fo

Re: Rebuild or buy new?

I don't know about the prices where you live, but up here in Canada, I picked up a new pair of calipers from Lordco for $21 each... a no brainer IMO!

Again... just my 2 cents... and you get what you pay for!

Re: Rebuild or buy new?

Rebuilt calipers are about $10 each with a lifetime warranty. The kit to rebuild them is $8.

Re: Rebuild or buy new?

Pretty sure those would need to be sleeved to function properly, and that is reserved for "rare" items such as numbers matching restorations...

Re: Rebuild or buy new?

Autozone offers metric GM calipers for $9.95 each rebuilt exchange. the rebuild kits are $6.95.
It doesn't make sense to use questionable materials when the economics and safety are in plain sight.
When I bought my frame stub, the thing had sat for about 10 years in the open. I didn't even take the pistons out, I clipped the brake lines, undid the bolts and trotted down to Autozone, and was pleasantly surprised.
Note:
I am still building my truck at this time, and haven't put any fluid to them yet. Stay tuned.....

Re: Rebuild or buy new?

All good reasons to consider buying rebuilts instead of rebuilding but....the question was the pitting and it doesn't matter. The caliper piston never touches the bore. It rides on the square sealing ring installed in the housing. The caliper piston condition is much more important as it has to slide through the square sealing ring without leaking or binding. Those calipers are infinitely rebuildable as far as caliper housing condition is concerned. An advantage to doing your own is you can do some fancy powder coat to the calipers before you assemble them and then they'll look cool inside your fancy wheels. I use the Eastwood system and, even though it's a little compulsive/obsessive, I LIKE it.

Re: Rebuild or buy new?

I decided to just buy the reman with lifetime warranty, thanks for the info on the bore though thats what i assumed... I would powdercoat them but im gonna end up with smoothie wheels so powdercoated calipers would be a waste...
