Dropped spindle repair

Anybody have an idea how to fix my spindle??? I got these in trade and didnt know they were messed up till i went to use them. Where the caliper bolt goes in from the spindle side, the hole is wollared out where it would thread into.

No pics, they are at work right now.

Re: Dropped spindle repair

If it's not wollared out too bad you could likely drill out and install a helicoil insert.

Re: Dropped spindle repair

It is wallered out too bad for a helicoil. Traded some stock spindles for these and didnt notice they were messed up till later.

Re: Dropped spindle repair

Re: Dropped spindle repair

Steel or cast iron, either way I would think that you should be able to weld it closer to the size needed or fill it in solid and then drill it out to the size it should be.

Re: Dropped spindle repair

Tony, I don't think you will get a good weld on this type steel.

Since it's wallered that bad you may try drilling the hole oversized then tap the hole to the appropriate size fine thread bolt pitch, Screw the bolt with loctite through it with threads sticking out each side. Cut both ends of the bolt off flush with spindle then peen around the threads on each side to keep it from backing out.

Now you have a filled hole in which you can drill the center and tap to the proper caliper bolt size. A buddy worked at a engine block repair shop and used this method repairing cracks and holes.....

Re: Dropped spindle repair

I have this exact same issue with a set of McGaughy's drop spindles. I had to buy a second set of spindles to replace the one I messed up. McGaughy does a very sloppy tap for the caliper bolts, when I got my second set in I used a thread chaser to make sure all the burrs and debris was cleaned out so I wouldn't mess up another spindle. I'm going to go to a machine shop to see if I can salvage the one I damaged.

Re: Dropped spindle repair

Tried welding one up and re-tapping it once. My tap didn't care for the welding rod material at all, wouldn't hardly scratch it.

Re: Dropped spindle repair

Thanks for the link raic65. I traded stock ones for these and have no money in them. I think I have a few different ways to go now. Thanks guys!
