Using sound deadening material for gas tank strap cushion

I recently dropped my gas tank to change the fuel sending unit. I also am going to paint the gas tank. The tar paper that is used as a cushion between the gas tank and straps is in very bad shape and needs to be replaced. I dont want to buy a roll of tar paper since i need a little amount. I have a bunch of leftover sound deadening material and was wondering if i could use this instead.

As long as it can hold up to the elements (water, mud, etc..) then it should be fine. I used some cut up old rubber floor mats on mine.

I'm kinda like duct tape- no real purpose, but handy to have around.

Go to a junk yard. Get some off any old tank they have laying around. I got mind from a supper duty. They were plastic and fit perfectly width wise. They were much longer then I needed. Just cut to length.

Re: Using sound deadening material for gas tank strap cushion

I went to a heavy truck place and bought gas tank strap rubber. It was the same width and wrapped around the sides to hold it in place. To top it off it looks like it is supposed to be there. Not like it was hacked.
