Jethro's fan belts

Has anyone tried the new rope fan belts from Jethro Bodine Inc.?

Okay, here's the thing: I'm finally getting around to finishing my Old Air kit, but I'm not too confident about the fan belt routing. I put rope "belts" on it for a look see, and I'm concerned about the power steering pump. Is that enough belt on the pulley to run the pump?

I don't have the the dual water pump pulley yet, pick it up tomorrow.

Also:

1) If anyone has pics of their Old Air long water pump setup, I'd like to see 'em.

2) What did you do about the top radiator hose? My existing hose goes right through the alternator.

3) Does the compressor have to be oriented so that the hose fittings are pointing up, or does it matter? I have them angled facing about 7 o'clock right now.

I can't answer your question but those are the same belts I use to determine length for new ones when I don't have an old one.

I'd rethink this that p/s isn't gonna fly with a v belt and the a/c looks like the loose side will flap enough to toss that belt

Ain't ya got no twine for to hitch up yer britches? Figger ya must feed ole Amos the mule prit near half a bale a day. And,I know you ain't a usin' all that twine fer yer fixemups cuz the place seems to be fallin' apart ever which way ya turn.

I've been following this thread for a while now. I agree here. Think about adding a single groove (flat) pulley on the balancer before the double you've got now. Use that to drive the P/S pump directly. Space either the AC or the alt. forward. I would much rather lose my alt. than my P/S at speed, if a belt broke.

You may try an old style straight forward water neck as well.

Thanks for the replies, (you too, special-k.) I'm about seriously underwhelmed with Old Air right now. The whole thing looks goofy, and even if I drive the PS with a separate belt, I'll still have 9 foot sections of belt flopping around - and in order to get a dedicated belt on the PS, I'll have to buy 25 more pulleys and wear out my grinder making new spacers.

Yeah, I never cared for those high mount setups, with the long belt spans.

I had a triple belt crank pulley laying around, so I threw it on. It will provide a dedicated belt for the PS - but now I have to find a new pulley for the PS pump that mates the rearmost belt... which brings up the questions:

1) Can I find a rear offset PS pulley in the junkyard?

2) How do you remove a power steering pulley?

There is a special puller to pull that PS pulley and another one to install it. You can probably rent one from you local auto parts. if you were near Dallas, TX you could borrow mine. I'm not sure about the offset.

The PS pulley remover can be bought at Harbor Freight...or many parts stores have the "loan-a-tool" program where you can use it for free by leaving a small deposit.

I found a guy on a Chevelle forum who has the exact opposite problem. Too bad he's not local, or we could just trade pulleys and be stylin'. I'll go down to the parts store and see if I can find that deep-dish pulley, and rent the puller if they have it.

and this IS why I bought the front mount march serp belt set..
was pricey, but everything is infront of the valvecovers, and nice and clean install

Yep. If I had it to do over, I'd absolutely go serpentine, and I positively would not buy a kit from Old Air. I'm stuck with it now, so we'll get it all bolted up and see if it flies apart or not.

I have everything now except the PS pulley. Hit three parts stores, but couldn't find a single person who knew how to find the pulley I need without a part number. Tomorrow I'll hit the junkyard that specializes in old GM stuff. They're way overpriced, but will probably have what I need.

when i first got my truck the power steering set up was the exact same as the first post and it worked just fine, up till i did the bbc swap.

I went and looked.I have 2 different PS pumps,each with a different pulley.One has the hub sticking out the front like yours.The other the hub is much shorter and might work.The part #'s are

Extended hub(like the one shown 14023172

Short hub has no part#
the hub length you have can be adjusted by using a different mount(the one that bolts to the pump and kets it swing).The two I have are from different years but one hads more offset than the other.
I looked thru my parts book and none of these show up so all are from post 72.
