Junkyard find
Went to one of the local wrecking yards yesterday looking for parts for my 71 GMC. Didn't find much in the line of parts but this did follow me home: 71 GMC, 350/th350, don't know about the engine or trans yet although it does turn over.
It has an aftermarket electronic ignition that I need info on, it has a box on the fender that says Hays. ( see pics) The only things I saw missing (so far) are power steering pump, brackets and hoses, the tailgate ashtray and the keys. I think I got a pretty good deal at $750.00, if I'm lucky it may even run! |

Re: Junkyard find
If it is solid as it looks in the photos, it was a good deal. Congrats.

Re: Junkyard find
The Hays box is more than likely an electronic trailer brake controller.
Congrats on the find! It looks solid!!

Re: Junkyard find
The Hays box is ignition. Here is an old Stinger catalog: http://rides.webshots.com/photo/2852...10270329bSZNYg
From what I have gathered Bill Hays sold his clutch business and started this electronic ignition company. He had to drop the Hays name right away because of his previous sales contract, so your Hays box is probably an early model. You will notice the boxes on the catalog look the same except they say Stinger rather than Hays.

There are two ways you can remedy the no keys situation. For a temp fix you can find an ignition switch that has the keys, unplug the connector from the back of the existing switch and plug the replacement one in and let it hang down under the dash. For a more permanent fix take the passengers door lock out and there should be a code number stamped on it (see pic below for sample) If there is and you take it to a full service locksmith he can cut you a key from the code number and it should fit the ignition. This only applies if none of the locks have been changed. Worth a try. LockDoc

Re: Junkyard find
I'm not sure about the engine being from a 1971 or at least the heads. Cylinder heads before 1969 did not come with accesory holes in them.
But I agree with everyone else, a couple of nice finds. I would love to have a new project like that 1971 GMC to work with. Congrats! Keith |

Re: Junkyard find
Well heres an update on the truck:
Battery had about 50% charge, pulled the plug off back of ignition switch and used a couple of jumper wires. Engine started and ran rough, #1 and 6 plug wires were reversed, fixed that after a little backfire that blew a hole in the exhaust pipe. Running smoother now, no oil smoke Burning really rich, no black smoke but can smell fuel, tried adjusting carb, didn't help much ran it for a couple hours while messing with it, good oil pressure, no over heating or anything too bad. The worst thing on the truck I found is no reverse, trans goes into forward gear fine and doesn't seem to slip, but nothing in reverse The really bad thing is now my wife thinks I should sell my 92 GMC! I tried telling Her I have more into the running gear and wheels then I could get for it but She doesn't seem to sympathetic......... |

Hey man! That's great you got the motor running! I've got a simple fix for the reverse not working. Never park it in front of something again!!! Use the pull through method. But yeah, you might want to hold off on selling your 92 GMC for a little while. Again congrats on your new project! Keith |

Re: Junkyard find
For the fuel issue-adj floats to spec (if u need help i find instructions/specs)
Still not right after that check/regulate your fuel pressure OR buy the edelbrock $100 fuel pump Stock pump will put too much out and push the needle/seat apart and make it flood. Start with float level/drop/clean carb then test fuel pressure with a good guage

Re: Junkyard find
By the look of the casting mark on the front of them I think the heads are 58 and up 283 power pack heads. 1.72 intake, 1.5 exhaust with 59 cc chambers. Those heads were also used on 57-60 FI engines.

Re: Junkyard find
Well now if we hooked your truck and my 67 together we'd be fine, mine won't go in forward gears, but does great in reverse!
