Was wondering how difficult would it be to replace the old 3 speed manual trans for a m21 or m22 To go behind a 350? WHich trans would be better the m21 or m22

i just parted out a 64 that had a m21 with 350 setup i kept all the stuff but sold the trans let me know if you need any parts the only thing i noticed was that they used a bellhousing that matched out trucks the old cast iron one that fits right to the existing crossmember

It'll bolt right in with the correct shifter.

M21--helical cut gears ....quiet, not quite as strong as M22 but still very capable trans

M22--straight cut gears (rock crusher)....much like a cam gear drive, very strong but noisy.

Re: Muncie 4 speed in a 65 c10

When I installed the Muncie in my old truck .... I realized it was the EXACT same length as the stock 3-speed, which I believe was a MUncie as well.

Not soon enough though, as I went ahead and removed the stock bellhousing crossmember and fabbed up another one for the tail end. Didnt have too !!

The driveline slid right in as well.

As for shifter, I ordered one from Summit for an early Nova....this placed the shifter in the correct spot for the bench seat.

Worked out really well.

For a street application, an M20 would probably be a better pick than either the M21 or M22 which are both close ratio transmissions according to the attached link. 1st gear in both is a 2.20 which is happiest with a 4.10 or lower rear axle. The main advantage of the close ratio gear set is to keep the engine within a limited rpm range where it develops maximum power for racing.

In a street application, having the gear ratios too close together results in frequently skipping either 2nd or 3rd gear because they aren’t far enough apart to make it worth going through all four. A wide ratio transmission provides much more flexibility for a street engine.

From another perspective however, I’m sorry I don’t have an M22 in my truck. I love the howl and whine they emit, which isn’t available from any other transmission.

Here’s a link regarding Muncie gear ratios:

How would a Super T-10 compare in strength to the M-21 or M-22. Seemed like we were always looking for a Rock Crusher or a T-10 when we were building the cars back in the day

Don’t know if it’s true, but from everything I’ve read the new production Richmond Super T10 is stronger than the M22. Again from what I’ve read, the problem with the M22 was they had very strong gears but the case would stretch. This was part of the reason I bought a new Richmond Super T10 when I swapped back to a stick shift several years ago. I don’t beat it up so I can’t comment on how much abuse it can handle. According to the owner’s manual, the strongest version (2.43 1st gear) can handle 375 foot pounds of torque. The 2.64 1st gear model I have is rated at 325 fp. I haven’t found a torque rating for the M22.

The only disappointment I have with the Super T10 is it isn’t as obnoxious as the M22 in the sounds effects department. I really love the M22 transmission racket.

Here’s another thread that discussing the comparison between the M22 and Super T10 (T10S):

Re: Muncie 4 speed in a 65 c10

Jason, I have had an M-21 in my '63, with 327, for the last 20+ years.
Lots of fun and no problems.
Greg.
