Paint wraps on classic trucks?

After seeing a Chevy Tahoe with an advertising wrap on it I started wondering about solid color vehicle wraps, so I looked them up. Turns out they do exist, called paint wraps, they have a very similar look as paint does. Easier to install and cheaper as well. I am going to be looking into this and will update about it if I decide its right for me.

I found a few companies that apply it in single solid colors, like a common paint job

We do wraps and yes it can be expensive. $600-1100 to wrap depending on vehicle and material. Of course its just the outside. We can do them in flat black to. it takes most of the day to do one but it is something you can do yourself with a little practice. Just need a lot of blades,heat gun,squeegees, two people and patience. We sell the wrap also.

Why??? I'll "stick" with paint and keep the sheetmetal exposed to the air.

There is something for everyone these days. I prefer paint but some people like camo. its removable if they want to re sell.

Wrapping vehicles is a huge industry here in Las Vegas, I will get some quotes.

Arent' there concerns like trapping moisture under there and promoting rust?

This is my brothers wrap on his work van.. you can pretty do any graphic you want. They had an S-10 in the shop when he was getting his done that was plain flat blue that looked pretty cool. Cost wise, it's all about square footage from what I am told

not if its in good shape to begin with. Rust my come from the inside on older vehicles. The wrap itself is not going to promote rust if properly done.

my work truck has a wrap,lot of bubbles under it.not a fan on a custom truck .ok for work trucks but I would not do one just my 2 cents.

A close friend of mine owns a custom graphics shop back home and I would help him do wraps all time. There are a few tricks, but over all its not that difficult if you take your time. I have seen bad wrap jobs with bubbles, creases, etc, but that's nothing that cant be overcome with just having a attention to detail. I cant think of any graphics that I would personally put on my truck, but over the summer I did wrap the bottom half in clear vinyl. You cant see it and it pretty much eliminates rock chips that occur under normal driving conditions.

Amen brother.Just an FYI we painted my brothers 71 Torino Hot Rod Black with a white roof in an evening, did it all for less than $200.00, the wrap doesn't seem so cost effective compared to a good old spray job in my opinion. Just my 2-cents. Joseph

Won't it fade,curl on the edges,become brittle,crack,shrink or do any of the other things vinyl normally does with age? In winter,when water freezes on the edges,can't it lift? I still prefer good old artistic talent with paint.

I'de like to know more about the longivity of these wraps. I had read in one of my car magazines that these wraps don't last ( due to fading in sunlight )as long as a decent paint job.
Also, some of the wraps I have seen lack detail. Close inspection showed the ones I have seen to be pixelated in appearance. Nevertheless, I would like to have a desert tan digital camo wrap on my 74 Datsun truck.

yeah but..........does it pull the paint ahen you take it off? or can you take it off? How does it leave the finish of the real paint? I have thought of using a clear for the rockers and area below the bottom trim line to prevent rock chips.......anyone done this before?

Use what is designed for this: Clear bra material or Paint protection Film....google it. Dont use vinyl. Furthermore make sure the surface is very well prepped cause yes, if the bond strength of the vinyl to paint exceeds the paint to substraite/primer, its gonna peel off


So yeah, if you have crappy prep under your paint, you can peel it off, Wrapping a vehicle is NOT a cheap substitute for doing proper prep or paint work. Any surface imperfections are there JUST LIKE PAINT, it's not magic. Dents, rust, sand scratches, multiple paint jobs will all show under vinyl. Most of the wrapped cars are pretty new vehicles that want a in-vogue semi-gloss "paint job". It's like anything else, you can have crap wraps, just like you can have crap paint jobs, just a different set of problems (like bubbles, de-laminations etc). There are good grades of vinyl and cheap stuff too. You get what you pay for, cheap price equals either/or cheap materials and/or labor/prep shortcuts. Just like paint work, funny how that works...no free lunch.

Yeah there was an article in truckin about them, You can even get them with some sparkle in them like metallic paint. Dont know how durable they are and not sure exactly how a scratch would be touched up but the tahoe in truckin was 2 tone tan and metallic dark green but it was as expensive as paint.
