71 GMC Grille with 67/68 Hood

I recently acquired a real nice 71 GMC grille. I've always liked the look of the GMC grilles and was wondering if it was possible to use that grille with the sloped 67-68 hood? Has anyone done this or is it not possible?

Re: 71 GMC Grille with 67/68 Hood

I've seen the 67-68 hood on 71-72 trucks before. I don't know why it wouldn't work. Joseph

Re: 71 GMC Grille with 67/68 Hood

I guess my main concern is the top of the grille. The 71 grille that I have has a chrome piece riveted to the top of it that holds the hood stops. It doesn't appear that this piece is the same on a 67 grille. Does anyone have any pictures of this piece on their 67 grille? Could I take that top piece from a 67 grille and rivet it onto the 71 grille to make it work with the 67-68 hood?

Re: 71 GMC Grille with 67/68 Hood

I have both a 68 and 72 and the stops appear to be in the same place on both trucks in relation to the top of the fender. If it wasn't dark outside i would get a couple of pics for you. Joseph

If you could take a picture of each in the next day or two I'd appreciate it. Thanks for your help.

Re: 71 GMC Grille with 67/68 Hood

67-72 GMC grilles are all identical by dimensions and will interchange flawlessly. The 69-72 grilles have a surround riveted to the top in place of the body filler on 67/68s. That has to be removed and you are good to go.

I agree with Tim, simply remove the top bar and you are good to go.

not simply removiong the top bar, but swapping in one from a 67/68... THEN it'll fit.

Heres a pic from a local show I went to. 67/68 hood looks great on a 71/72 when its done right.

Re: 71 GMC Grille with 67/68 Hood

Jay,here are some pictures:

I was assuming you had a 67/68 GMC and just wondered if you could use a 71/72 grille in it. I have a spare filler. If you decide to go this route let me know.

That's actually a customized/reworked hood. You can't simply exchange a 67/68 hood for a 69-72 hood on a Chevy. The purpose of the grille surround is to fill the void left by the later hoods being shorter. This thread is about GMCs. GMC did the surround to fill the void, but the surround is an attachment to the grille and two pieces to the front edge of the fenders, unlike Chevys, which have a one piece surround that is the whole grille except for plastic insert. 67-72 GMC fenders are the same as 67/68 Chevy fenders. Chevy changed the fenders when the hood changed. The later Chevy grilles won't work with the earlier hood and fenders.

Re: 71 GMC Grille with 67/68 Hood

Great information here guys. Thanks!

How about the radiator supports for GMCs? Are 67-72 GMC radiator supports all the same? I have a 71 support and want to use it with 67 Chevy fenders, 67 Chevy hood and 71 GMC grille (with the top piece on the grille removed and replaced with one from a 67-68 GMC grille).

Your 71 (GMC) suport will work with what you have in mind, The only difference is 67/68 GMC supports have nut inserts across the bottom for the 67/68 splash shield, the 69/72 support does not.

The red/orange truck is a good friend of mine Robbie Seals and he did use a 67-68 hood but did also have to rework the front of it. The green truck belongs to another friend Bill Legg These are two Rogersville Tennessee boys!
