I saw somewhere a mention of a product that is good for dying or changing the colour of seat belts.

Anybody know of such a product? A quick search produced no results but it might have been elsewhere that I saw it.

Another planned winter project?

I used spray can dye for vinyl and fabric like duplicolor or sem brand.

I heard you could throw them in the washing machine to clean them up from years of wear and dirt.

Ive been meaning to give RIT dye a try, ive heard of people using it with good results.

PO did it on the belts in my truck, and Im not happy with it. The color is flaking and the belts are quite stiff so they do not roll up nice.

It sucks. Don't do it. Use the spray can....light, multiple coats.

Im not sure how he did it, to me it looks like spray. The coats have not really bounded with the material on some parts of the belt. In those areas the belt is stiff and the color is pealing. Maybe it´s like 85Bowtie say´s, the key is to lay the coats very thinn.

About a month ago, I bought a set of stock seat belts from Craigslist. They came out of a 69' Chevy Truck and were really in need of reconditioning. Luckily, the retractor boots were in great shape as were the buckle covers, GM push buttons and chrome ends. I had heard so many good things about RIT Fabric Dye, I thought I'd give it a try. Because the belts were originally parchment in color and stained pretty bad, I used 2 packs of RIT Dye and then followed the rest of the manufacturers directions. For the plastic pieces, I used Rustolem Paint for Plastic. Pictured are before and afters.

That looks good, have to see if I can buy something similar here, and try it out. Even if I fail it can´t get much worse than it all ready is:-)
The biggest problem with my belts will be to get the old dye or spray or what ever it is off first, since it´s now cracking and pealing I do not think it´s any good trying new dye over it

Do you mean vinyl paint from duplicator ?
