Axle to frame clearance: 6" drop
Don't suppose anyone can tell me the distance between the top of the axle and bottom of the frame on a 67-72 shortbed with a 6" drop?
Thanks! Posted via Mobile Device |

Re: Axle to frame clearance: 6" drop
Thank you sir! I've done a search, and looks like plenty of people have done the 6" drop without a C-Notch... Questions is, SHOULD I just notch it before I get the frame powder coated? Or should I just install a button style bump stop above the axle and be done with it? The heaviest thing I really think I might haul is my dirt bike. So not too much.
Thanks again! Last edited by Portmod7; 10-24-2011 at 12:11 PM. Reason: Did a search, found the answer to what I asked. |

Re: Axle to frame clearance: 6" drop
I would notch it anyway.
Then there is no worry of bottoming out, no matter how much stuff you have loaded in the bed.

Re: Axle to frame clearance: 6" drop
I have a 66 gmc and have not notched it yet, but after I do notch it and then add 2" spacers on my trailing arm it looks to me like the bed and the top of the differential are going to start interfering..............looks like the limit is just that the bottom of the bed.....Kieth

Re: Axle to frame clearance: 6" drop
Thanks for the info. My plan at this point is to mock up the rear suspension, do some measuring, and build a notch that gives me max travel without the rear housing hitting the bed. I am putting a 9" in, so I think I'll be giving up a little travel, as I think the center section is a little taller than a 12-bolt, but I haven't actually measured yet...
I'm putting the Hotchkis TVS on the truck, and they don't call for a notch with their 6" rear springs, but after some quick mock up last weekend it seems close. So I should be fine most of the time without it, any notch I can afford will be icing on the cake! |

Re: Axle to frame clearance: 6" drop
Portmod7 – As you stated, the notch is not necessary. If it were, we would have done it on Mike’s C10 Truck project.
There are more pictures on our FaceBook page for the C10 Project: http://www.facebook.com/#!/media/set...1375072&type=1 If you want to notch it, that’s cool too. |
