Engine questions.

I have a few questions and concerns about my truck, for some backround info, the engine is less than 2000 miles and new, along with the trans. When my truck is in drive, there is a faint high pitched noise, nothing that others would hear, just something im obsessing about, the noise is non existent when the truck is in park, but starts whenever its in drive just idling. is this something i should be concerned about? any ideas? I checked the belt, and i dont believe thats where its coming from. Also, when the truck is in park, the idle is alot higher than in drive, is this normal?
Thanks.

Re: Engine questions.

What do you consider significantly higher idle? Of course the idle is going to be higher in Park than in Drive.

You just have to trace the noise down yourself. Does it sound internal? A rattle? A whine? What is it?

Re: Engine questions.

Yeah, im thinking the idle isnt a concern as it was only occuring during warm up until i hit the gas, but yes its just a high pitched noise thats very faint only when in drive, not coming from the engine bay, it sounds as if its coming from the middle of the undercarriage, thanks for the response and help man.

Re: Engine questions.

May want to check your inspection plate to see if it's loose or not, or pull it and check to make sure the converter bolts are tight...

Re: Engine questions.

Okay, thanks for the help il be sure to try. Would loose bolts make a high pitched sound? its not a knocking noise or anything just a really faint high pitched ringing only in drive. Theres no loss of power or anything so im pretty sure the converter is good, and snug.

I don't know. I'm trying to think of what could be making that sound. If they're "slightly" loose you may get more "constant" contact between the different surfaces that may make a more uniform sound VS. a banging sound or something similar. Maybe the higher RPMS help stabilize whatever may be loose. I'm not exactly sure, I would have to hear it to know for sure.

If it's a carb'ed truck than he most likely doesn't have an electric fuel pump.

Re: Engine questions.

I havent even looked into that, that slipped my mind, thanks i will, but wouldnt that make the sound in all gears as long as the trucks running? My truck is making the sound only in drive for some reason.

Re: Engine questions.

The reason I mentioned that is because you said the engine and trans were basically new....meaning they have been "touched"....so that would be a good place to start I would think.

If it's in drive....it is in "all gears" from an RPM standpoint. So yes, in any "gear" other than drive or neutral where you will have a higher idle, you will have a "rougher" running engine which can sometimes help exagerate things that are slightly loose.
