Gotta have a C-10... Help
I've been around a few of these trucks (my dad has a 72 3500 work truck). I want a c-10 71 or 72 that is in decent shape. I realize it's the same age as me so it's not going to be perfect for sure. I've not had any luck finding anything here in Virginia so I turned to ebay and other sources like hemmings.
My budget for a truck to get started with is around 5 grand. I plan to restore and make it a nice driver. What should I look for when purchasing? I've got time and a great area to work on it so I'm ready to jump in... Thanks for any advice Chris-\ UPDATE!! Pictures posted on page two... The search is over and now the fun really starts. have you been looking at craigslist? I see decent buys on there from time to time. Been thinking of putting my 71 up for sale but I am well out of your budget. I will keep an eye out and send you a link if I see something.

Re: Gotta have a C-10... Help
buy a $3500 clean body truck from the deserts of the southwestern US and spend the rest to ship it home. You will be $$$$$$$$$ ahead. Paint and body work (rust) will be the #1 cost of a restoration. For 5 grand, I would expect to be able to fly to so-cal, buy one, drive it home, and have some cash left over.

Re: Gotta have a C-10... Help
Longhorn Man is spot on. Your biggest expense in restoring an old truck is normally body and paint. You can save a LOT of money and future grief by purchasing one that is as rust free as possible. If you can find one thats already painted thats even better, but be very careful and have the paint professionally inspected before you buy.
If you can't find rust free in your region, look in areas that don't salt their roads.

Re: Gotta have a C-10... Help
Don't leave LWB or 3/4 tons out in your search.Read thru some of the build threads on here and see what it takes to shorten/convert one.You will probably be money ahead to get closer to what you want but as stated"Rust Free is your friend".The best advice is what they said
"Go west young man"

Re: Gotta have a C-10... Help
Agree with above response...I was in your shoes about 3 months ago.
I had been really looking hard for about 3 months (craigslist, ebay, side of the road, others) and had all but given up on getting what I wanted which at the time was just a "nice" SWB. I very quickly discovered that the price difference b/w "nice" and "a pile of junk" was about $6-7K. And the ones that were barely within my budget ($5-6K) had a lot of things that I KNEW I was going to have to change or things that I would not/could not be happy with. I was about to drop the whole idea of getting one of these trucks when I saw a LWB getting gas one day. Well one thing led to another and after a lot of discussing and looking at this forum, I expanded my search to include LWB. A week later I drove home in my "almost" perfect truck. '69 LWB with my favorite paint scheme for these trucks, the white/blue/white/blue, it had a 3 year old 350 crate, a 4 speed on the floor and best of all.....NO RUST on the important stuff. To make the point somebody said earlier, if you've got the space and tools to do the work, DO NOT BE AFRAID to cut the frame and make it a SWB, after I got done re-welding mine, I was kind of like "uh, ok that wasn't nearly as scary as I thought it would be". So, to wrap up my rambling: 1. Expand your search to LWB 2. NO RUST on important stuff (frame, bed, under cab, inner fenders) 3. Find what you want options-wise, motor, tranny, etc 4. Get ready to spend an inordinate amount of time and money over the next 6 months. 5. Don't get frustrated, walk away before that happens. 6. As I discovered just today, pay somebody else to do the sandblasting if you have any to do |

Re: Gotta have a C-10... Help
I'm surprised you can't find one for the amount you are willing to spend, I paid $2000 for my short 72 GMC 4X4 with a rebuilt 350 and zero rust. Be patient and keep looking! You will find one! There are still good deals out there!

Re: Gotta have a C-10... Help
For $5000 in this economy you will be able to find MANY MANY trucks that will fit the bill. Dont discount the earlier years of the same body style though. This one could be had for $5500.

I'm up now an hour before I leave for work looking and looking... I will find one soon. My Dad has been working with old cars now for about 10 years since he stopped working. Most recent build was a 56 Crown Vic Frame off so I have lots of Good help. He just so happens to have a great body man that helps on the weekends too.... Now I'm off to work to think about trucks all day. |

Search Craigslist out West. LA, San Francisco area. Post the links on the message board. Ask if there are any local members that might be able to go look at it for you.
And or hold it for you if you buy it. Fly out, drive it home. Or find a shipper.

I had to sell mine last year and I've been missing it ever since. Start with patience, advise from the folks here and you are already in better shape.

Re: Gotta have a C-10... Help
A guy I go to church with has his dad's 72 pickup. It's a very nice solid survivor. It's a 307/3speed truck. It can probably be had for about $5K. PM me for details
