who knows tilt steering columns?
I have been cleanng and painting my tilt column from a 71/72 truck. I have a broken spring that holds the tension on the shift lever( against the detent cam). I have posted a WTB but does anyone know if the spring from a non-tilt 69 column would work and can it be installed thru the hole for the shifter handle?

I don't know... but I'm trying to figure out which spring you are referring to.

Re: who knows tilt steering columns?
the spring I'm talking about goes into a recess in the "bowl" and can be seen from the outside of the column if you remove the shift lever. The spring keeps tension on the lever base to keep it engage in the shift "cam" so when you pull back on the shift to go from park to drive position, the spring keeps the lever in place.

Re: who knows tilt steering columns?
I just went through this with my truck. The spring should be interchangeable for most gm steering columns. The gm part# is 7812853 it is a gm only part and they don't always have it. But a spring from any 60's-70's gm should work. Mine cam out of a buick wagon

Re: who knows tilt steering columns?
pop the pin out of the shift lever, stick a screwdriver or pick of some sort behind the shift lever into the spring. This is just so the spring doesn't fall into the column. Then pull the shift lever out, then the spring. It just slides into a little hole in the bezel and pushes against the shift lever. Then do the same with the spring from your other column, verify they are close to the same and install the new spring in your column. It only pushes against the lever so you could do it with almost any spring. I tried a couple out of my tool box before I found one strong enough. Mine is a tilt.
