Is my Vortec 350 chipped or not?

I picked up a new winter rig its a 1996 gmc yukon gt 2door with a vortec 350. The guy i bought it from says it has a hypertech chip, but i'm not sure if i believe him. The thing gets down though it has a good power for having 177k. If i mash it 1st gear shifts at 5000 grand give or take +100 or -100rpm. No engine noise or anything and it holds really good oil pressure. Is there any way to tell if he really did chip it or not? the only way i'm thinking is to run it out to see if it still has the top speed limiter or not.... Anyone know of a way to tell?

Isn't 1996 the first mandatory year OBDII? I thought you have to "reprogram" a OBDII vehicle? No chip swapping that I know of. However, they do make reprogrammers, but you would need to find someone with a programmer and have them analyze yours.

Right. All the Vortec V8s require a programmer.

Ohh yep you guys are right hah i meant to say programmer not chip, all the same too me its all computer junk, I'm used to a good old carbed system where ya tune the carb with a screwdriver and ya change the timing with a light hah. I'll just believe the guy its "reprogrammed" with a hypertech tuner

If he had a programmer for it, why didn't he give it to you with the truck? It's useless to him (or anyone else for that matter) now anyhow because it's locked to the VIN of the truck.

Most people like to get rid of the 98 mph speed limiter when they re-program these trucks. If you can get the truck to a track or other closed course and get it past 98, then it's probably been re-programmed.

Yep, in this case, the only way to tell for sure is to get the programmer from the seller or use your own programmer. With a custom program, you can do anything from mild to wild, including eliminating the top speed limiter and not touch anything else. There really is no way to know what has been done without a programmer.
