Replacing intermediate steering shaft on 04 Sierra
Decided to order up the Borgeson replacement shaft from JEGS. Anybody done this lately, and any tips on what to do or not do? Was not really a problem, but didn't like that little clunk, clunk noise . Figure the Borgeson shaft with the anti vibe u-joint on it will be a one time fix here. Any help here would be great!

Re: Replacing intermediate steering shaft on 04 Sierra
Haven't replaced the shaft but i did learn the hard way to tape the steering wheel to gear shift or hold it someway when you take the shaft loose. If u take shaft loose and steering wheel spins free it can break the clock spring.

Re: Replacing intermediate steering shaft on 04 Sierra
Like chinquipin said, You need to secure the steering wheel from turning, The "J 42640" is the tool to do this in the procedure.
Removal Procedure Notice: The wheels of the vehicle must be straight ahead and the steering column in the LOCK position before disconnecting the steering column or intermediate shaft from the steering gear. Failure to do so will cause the SIR coil assembly to become uncentered, which may cause damage to the coil assembly. Install the J 42640 in the steering column lower access hole. Remove the nut and bolt from the lower shaft to upper shaft connection. Remove the nut and bolt (1) from the upper shaft (2) to steering column connection. Slide the intermediate shaft down, out of the steering column connection. Remove the accelerator pedal position sensor. Slide the upper intermediate shaft towards the instrument panel, out of the lower intermediate shaft, and remove the shaft from the vehicle. Installation Procedure Install the lower end of the upper intermediate shaft through the bulkhead, into the lower shaft. Install the upper end of the upper intermediate shaft (2) to the steering column. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions. Install the bolt and nut (1) at the connection of the upper intermediate shaft to the steering column. Tighten the nut to 62 Nm (46 ft. lbs.) . Install the accelerator pedal position sensor. Install the bolt and nut at the connection of the upper intermediate shaft to the lower intermediate shaft. Tighten the nut to 47 Nm (35 ft. lbs.) . Remove the J 42640 from the steering column lower access hole. |

My steering wheel does not lock. Key in or key out-wheel still spins? Any ideas?
