Joining the 1 ton C30 club

Finally pulled the trigger on a 1972 Cheyenne C30 1 ton truck...former motorhome that currently has a smaller flatbed on it, but, looking to find a longer 12-16' flatbed for it. I plan on making this the true 67-72 picker for me and really wanting to drop it down a bit. Is their drop spindles? What about the rear leaf springs, is their a drop shackle for 1 ton specific? Also, want to run newer 16" dually steel wheels..will these bolt on without mods? The truck has the original 402 with turbo 400, aftermarket air (no compressor), had buckets (but gone), and really clean door panels, dash pad, and visors. These pics are at the PO's home...will get more when I get it home..

Re: Joining the 1 ton C30 club

Good find! In that pic of the right front wheel, it looks like that may have been an inner rear for a while. It appears that you have the 9/16 lug, and the two-piece lug nut. If this is true, the newer style wheels will fit right up. These wheels are hub-centered, and do not use tapered lug nuts. Pull one of the lug nuts, and see if the washer spins freely, if it does, you have the later style.
As for the spindle and shackle questions, someone will jump in here shortly that can answer those ....

Re: Joining the 1 ton C30 club

oh of course i know haha, heck i would rather have a 67-68 clip in ok shape than the later clip, but at least it is the better looking of the later clip (71-72, and not 69-70 )

Re: Joining the 1 ton C30 club

That's a great find...lots of potential there. I don't see why you couldn't use drop spring mounts and/or drop shackles from any other leaf spring GM. Not sure about the spindles, but I believe there are C/20 drop spindles now and they may just work since the wheels use adapters/spacers. I guess it all depends on differences in the hub/rotor parts,if there are any. That's a bridge I've never crossed.
I think later clips look just fine. With an early clip it can't be a Cheyenne/30 any more. Why mess with a good thing. I like both but a bigger truck looks best with a more stout from IMO.

Re: Joining the 1 ton C30 club

The easy route for drop spindles is to swap to 73-87 spindles. A couple of manufacturers make 3 inch drop spindles for 73-87 C30 trucks.

Great job, she looks nice. We had one of these that was really nice and Blue for sale about a month ago for 2500. It had a sweet flatbed on it. It was the local Milk delivery people whom were selling it. It was just like yours. Anyway, good to see you get you one. I am awaiting more pictures.

Would the 73-87 up 1 ton spindles be a straight swap? Thanks for the input..

Re: Joining the 1 ton C30 club

I went to O Reilly Auto Parts website and researched the fitment of C30 spindles.

I looked up a 71 model C30, a 72 C30 and an 80 C30 and they all show to use the same K6129T lower ball joint, K6122 upper ball joint, and ES409RT tie rod end.

I know my half tons real well and only moderately well on my 1 tons. It's very common to put later model spindles on half tons but you have to change one of the ball joints and the tie rod ends. It looks like the 1 tons you don't have to do that.

Re: Joining the 1 ton C30 club

Tx brought up a good way to go that slipped my mind at the time. I always wondered why not swap newer front end parts. I see a lot of newer dual wheel 30s lowered,so they must make drop spindles. Look into the parts compatibility, but one thing you can always do is swap the entire assembly. But,if '80s use the same tie rods, there's your drop spindles. Check newer and see what happens.
