04' silver. 4.8 swap for 5.3
I'm not totally satisfied w my 4.8 in power and towing my bike trailor w going to the beach, thought of having a 5.3 put in. What all would be involved in this swap? Would it be as easy as when we used to swap out the old 305 for a beefy 350????
Just wondering before I try this myself! Thanks......

would be just like that, except you would need to reprogram your PCM, piece of cake.

You can go 5.3 or 6.0 with just a tune. Or PM member Shon and try a custom computer tune with your 4.8, I think you'll be surprised.

The bore and stroke is different on a 4.8 and a 5.3 isnt it? I would think so!

Re: 04' silver. 4.8 swap for 5.3
5.3L & 4.8L share the same bore, The 4.8 has a shorter stroke. The factory tune in your PCM will run a 5.3L NO problem.

Re: 04' silver. 4.8 swap for 5.3
usmcchevy guy says that I can tune my 4.8 to run like a 5.3 atleast that's what I gathered from his reply above. So if that the truth then why change motor's? What kind of program needs to be added or what??? I'm clueless to this pcm crap!!!

Re: 04' silver. 4.8 swap for 5.3
i'm not sure that is what he implied... i think he is saying you can swap out the 4.8, and then put in the 5.3 without having to change the computer.

I was just pointing out a stock 5.3L will run just as good with the stock 4.8L tune as it does with a stock 5.3L tune in the PCM. I have swaped several 4.8s for 5.3s for towing purposes & the 5.3 always outperfomes the 4.8 |

Re: 04' silver. 4.8 swap for 5.3
The 5.3L is nothing more than a stroked 4.8L. I have a 4.8 in my 02 1500 4x4 with a few bolt ons and it will keep up with the slightly modified 5.3 in my Tahoe. Swap in a LQ9 6.0L cam and a good tune and you would net roughly 330hp or more with the 4.8. its cheaper than a swap and tune. there is a guy on ebay selling genuine gm LQ9 camshafts for $69.
