Replacing Power Steering hoses
Lippys thread got me thinking. What kinda headaches are involved with replacing the hoses? My hose with the regular hose clamps is leaking slowly and tightening it isn't doing any good. They both look pretty bad. How do you replace these hoses? How do you replace the one with the pressure fitting ends? I want to fix this before any failure occurs. Any help appreciated

The lines are still available - you want to use flare wrenches to keep from messing up the fittings. I got mine at O'Reily's when I added power steering. You can't put the hoses in the wrong place as the thread sizes are different.

To tell you the truth, I don't even know where to begin. I mean, what, just start undoing the hoses and put the new ones on? I realize there might have to be some bleeding done on it afterwards but should you somehow purge it of old fluid? I take it one of the hoses is under pressure and the other is not. I've looked in my Service manual but it doesn't have much detail about replacing the hoses. I feel ridiculous asking but its something I can't say I've ever done before. Help! :p :p

I will let some one more knowledgeable respond on whether you should try to get rid of the old fluid. If it still looks pinkish, I probably wouldn't worry about it. Basically just disconnect the old lines and put on the new, may be a pain to get to the pump's hoses unless you pull the pump. Once you get the new lines on, fill it up, start the engine to circulate the fluid in the lines. I shut it down and then put in more fluid. Then, usually with the tires off the ground, work the steering back and forth to get rid of air. Shut it down add more fluid, repeat until stops squeeling and reservoir is filled to the proper level. I remember one guy posted he couldn't seem to get rid of the air bubbles and another member recommended letting it sit over night then filling and should be good to go.

it's easy to purge. Just leave the return hose disconnected from the pump. Crank the engine without starting (disconnect the coil or HEI live wire) and keep filling the pump until the fluid runs clear.
The pressure hose is the one with metal fittings / nuts at both ends. The return hose is fitted only on the steering gear box side. They are easy to replace. Just unbolt and bolt back on. for the return hose, you have to loosen a hose clamp on the pump side as it just fits onto a nipple on the back of the pump.
