Suburban Air Ride Questions . . .

Hey guys I just bought an '89 Suburban. I'm not new to air ride, but I'm looking for some inspiration. Has anyone bagged their Suburbans w/ out cutting into the rear cargo area? I'm usually all for cutting something up, but this is just way too clean and its going to be my daily. My last vehicle was a 1994 S-10 Blazer 4 door that I bagged and stockfloored. I'm just wanting a clean practical daily driver now though. Thanks in advance.

Can't offer any advice on the rear of a Burb, but welcome to the forum DollaBill_TX.

Re: Suburban Air Ride Questions . . .

How low are you trying to go? If you wanna lay it out, well the axle has to go somewhere, but you knew that.

If you just wanna ride a bit lower a bolt in notch (or welded in slice of tube) is about as low as you'll be able to go since the pumpkin is gonna be the stopper when it hits the floor. Seen a couple little covers made to give a little more room for the pumpkin but we are really only talking an inch and then its on to the notches...

Re: Suburban Air Ride Questions . . .

I guess my intentions aren't as extreme as they used to be. I want to go as low as possible but not cut up the interior. I'll probably end up building a mild notch, but I want to see what kind of link setups people are using, if anything.

Do the 4-bar set-up like Ride Tech offers for trucks. Clean, simple, & functional. Nice start BTW!

Building a small, high rpm engine with the perfect bore, stroke and rod ratio is very impressive.

Cubic inches is like Indiana Jones with a cheap pistol.

Thanks man! You have a link to this setup. I'm guessing it's a parallel 4 link.

Re: Suburban Air Ride Questions . . .

What has been done to the front does it already have drop spindles ?

Here is a inexpensive 4 link with bag mounts on the lower arms.........If you do need to go low this looks like it might work on a burb....Kieth

I think that tri-link upper might be a tight squeeze if you aren't cutting the floor. Maybe those lower bars and a watts link or something.

As for those lower bars, just thinking aloud here, but since the bag on bar setups are usually on really low trucks that need a lot more lift to get to ride height, I'm wondering if your ride height might be taller than desired when aired up to a comfortable level. Course the fact that it's an ass heavy 'burb might negate this all together and make this a really good choice.

Either way the 'burb looks like a great start!

Bill,

Nice square fender.
I run a parallel 4 link w/ our 104mm rolling sleeve behind the axle on the rear of my suburban. Rides excellent plus I can tow anything I want with it.

Yeah I don't think I'll be running a bag on bar or a wishbone. I'm most likely going to run a parallel w/ a panhard or watts link and bags behing axle. I'm not looking for tons of lift just enough to for a comfortable ride heighth.

You have any pictures of the setup by any chance? I'd like to see the install. Any pictures of it aired out too?

Re: Suburban Air Ride Questions . . .

Here is a picture of the bag setup. That air bag uses a single mounting bolt in the center of the top, and I just have a single hole bolting it right under the frame rail. It is at a point of the frame where there is a crossmember so there is plenty of strength. I built a bridge off the lower mounts to attach the lower bag to. This is on a 95 Suburban so pictures of it dumped wouldn't do you much good, but it gives you a idea on a bag setup. I have it as low as I xan get it without doing major floor modifications, its just my daily driver and didn't want to get into all that. With the rolling spring behind the axle it rides killer and I still pull car trailers all over the U.S.

Thanks for the picture Rodney. That looks really good. It's a definate plus to be able to still pull a trailer too.

Re: Suburban Air Ride Questions . . .

The best way to do it would to an IRS swap, its easy and you wont have to cut anything. Use a thunderbird or gen 2 RX 7 rear end.

Re: Suburban Air Ride Questions . . .

Ive done them in 90s suburbans and blazers, and ive done them in c10s. And with a little bit of work you can make them bolt in. So Yes. The RX-7 is perfect becuase you can run a nice wide wheel... You ever done one?

Re: Suburban Air Ride Questions . . .

Also you wont have to worry about clearing the pumpkin, you can lay out on 22s with an RX7 rear end on a 40 series. not to mention 4 wheels camber when lay'd out looks pretty sick and youll be different.... sorta, lots of people have done them

Re: Suburban Air Ride Questions . . .

4 wheel camber looking cool agreed.

RX 7 rear in a full sized burb seems like a good way to frequently break a rearend to me.

Not saying you or someone else hasn't done it and I know they are popular swaps in cars and small buggies (the 'busa powered stuff). But again none of those has the weight of a burb.

But I hear what you are saying about the IRS solution being a good way to not have to cut floor. You should post up some links or pics.

Re: Suburban Air Ride Questions . . .

HP isn't the issue, the GVW of the 'burb is what concerns me.
